Google is Driving Millions to File Share Sites

Ever wonder where all the traffic to file share sites comes from? Well, according to our data, the main traffic driver is none other than the most popular search engine in the world. This is something we’ve noticed recently, with Game of Thrones fans downloading episodes of the popular TV show from equally popular piracy sites. And Google is sending millions who search for ‘Game of Thrones’ episodes to these Torrent file-sharing download sites.

A review of top-ranked file-sharing websites from April 2014 through March 2015 revealed that the Silicon Valley tech giant sent nearly 4.9 million searches for Game of Thrones material to website KickassTorrents. The site clearly kicked butt compared to related Google search referrals that went to other torrent sites like extratorrent.cc and torrentz.eu.

The search giant has been embroiled in disputes with Hollywood studios for years over allegations that it doesn’t do enough to prevent unauthorized access to copyright-protected films and television shows. Google has long argued that the U.S. federal Communications Decency Act makes it immune from liability as an intermediary from copyright infringement by others online.
