Using SimilarWeb’s exclusive Usage Rank which combines Current Installs and Daily Active Users, we are able to discover which apps are trending up and which have been trending down. To view the hottest apps on April, check out last month’s post here.
Photo Editor Pro rose 1,031 spots in the rankings. Interestingly, Photo Editor Pro wasn’t the only picture editing app that has been trending recently. They are also joined by Photo Collage Editor an app which rose from 1,469th overall in April to 269th in May. Both apps are published by Zentertain, an app publisher that is positioning itself as the top destination for photo editing.
Aside from these photo apps, many gaming apps have been trending recently, led by Snake.io, a fresh take on the classic Snake video game. Jumping even more than Snake.io, Hungry Shark World rose 10,031 spots in the US Usage Rank and now ranks 226th overall. The app is the sequel to Hungry Shark Evolution, which as of May 30th, ranked 518th overall. Other trending games include Wizard of Oz: Magic Match, Pearl’s Peril, and two celebrity branded game apps: BRITNEY SPEARS: AMERICAN DREAM and Fetty Wap:Nitro Nation Stories.
Turning now to apps trending down in May, GroupMe, a communication app tops the list, dropping 21 places in overall Usage Rank. In May, the app was installed on 2.51% of all US Android devices and had an average usage time of 9 minutes and 38 seconds. These numbers pale in comparison to Facebook’s Messenger app which was recently ranked as the most used messaging app in America.
Two Disney branded apps were also trending down in May, Disney Crossy Road, and KINGDOM HEARTS Unchained χ. Both apps still rank among the top 1000 Android apps in the US, but if their usage continues to decline, they could fall even further.
Another big-name app publisher which saw its app decline in May was Nintendo’s app Miitomo. We covered Miitomo’s rise in March and pointed out that their largest growth was coming from countries such as France and Germany. However, when looking at Miitomo’s usage in those countries as well, it becomes apparent that the app is seeing a worldwide decline after its initial honeymoon period.
Two pro sports team’s apps make the list of trending down this month. San Antonio Spurs and Chicago Blackhawks Official both saw their apps decrease in Usage Rank after their early playoff exists. The Spurs fell to the Thunder on May 12th, while the Blackhawks lost to the Blues on April 25th.
In fact, the Spurs and Blackhawks weren’t the only teams to exit the playoffs early and see a huge drop in app usage. Other sports teams had apps that ranked within the top 10,00 overall but saw usage decrease dramatically over the last month. In the NHL, the Washington Capitals and New York Rangers also saw their apps drop significantly in Usage Rank, both falling well over 5,000 places.
In the NBA, the Portland Trail Blazers and Miami Heat also saw their apps decline after their respective playoff exits. Miami’s app fell to 10,619th overall, while Portland’s app dropped to 20,363rd overall.
