Networking in the Digital Age is All About Social Media

LinkedIn, the professional social networking website just reported earnings for Q1 2015. While next quarter’s predicted growth is less than what analysts expected, the company’s nearly 300% social media traffic increase over the last two years is noteworthy.

In April 2013, the company had nearly 4M referrals from other social media networks. By March 2015, that number skyrocketed to almost 12M. These referrals were 1% of LinkedIn’s desktop traffic of 13.5 billion visits during the 2-year period.

Roughly 168M social media referrals that sent LinkedIn this traffic. Approximately 15% of these were from SlideShare, a business presentation sharing tool that is a unit of LinkedIn.

Finally, here are the Top 10 countries delivering LinkedIn the most visits, along with changes in that traffic from Q4 2014 and Q1 2015.

Clearly the US is commanding the market in terms of LinkedIn traffic share. But the overall trend here is clear – the way to network and cultivate business relationships in the digital age starts with social media. So start beefing up your LinkedIn profile, but be careful what you’re posting on Facebook (and Twitter, for that matter!)
