The Top 100 Most Visited Websites in the World (May 2026)

May 2026 had plenty of stories worth telling. AI tools are still pulling users away from each other. A wave of new streaming content landed almost every week. One of the biggest marketplaces in the world continued to lose ground as the policy that built it kept unraveling. And for news publishers, the squeeze from zero-click search got a little tighter.
According to Similarweb’s web traffic data, the top 100 most visited websites worldwide in May 2026 recorded a combined total that reflects a market increasingly split between platforms investing in new features and those absorbing built-in headwinds.
What is the #1 most-visited website in the world?
Google.com remained the most visited website in the world in May 2026, with approximately 87.5B monthly visits.
Google’s dominance is not simply a function of scale. It is increasingly a function of how AI is reshaping what search means. With AI Overviews and AI Mode now default experiences in many markets, Google is resolving more queries without sending users anywhere else. That dynamic, as discussed later in this article, is putting real pressure on the news and media sites that once relied on Google referrals for a significant share of their traffic.

Highlights from the top websites
Below are 10 standout websites from May 2026’s top 100. Each saw a meaningful month-over-month change.
ChatGPT.com
#5 Worldwide
🤖 ~5.565B visits | ▲ 0.99% MoM
ChatGPT grew for the month, but at a slower pace than nearly every other major AI platform in May.
The 0.99% gain is real growth, but it is close to flat when other platforms in the same category put up gains of 5%, 11%, and 16%. ChatGPT’s web traffic share has been declining for over a year, falling from 76.4% of all AI chatbot web traffic 12 months ago to around 52.7% one month ago. Gemini has taken the largest share of that ground, rising from roughly 9% to 27.3% over the same period. Claude climbed from 1.6% to 8.9%.
That context matters. ChatGPT still commands the largest absolute audience of any AI chatbot by a wide margin. But the era of its uncontested dominance over this category is over. In May 2026, users had more credible alternatives than at any previous point, and the traffic data shows them using those alternatives.
The pattern is visible in the chart. ChatGPT’s monthly traffic has been broadly flat since late 2025, oscillating in a range rather than growing. For a product that was expanding rapidly a year ago, the plateau is one of the clearer signals in this month’s data.
TikTok.com
#9 Worldwide
🎵 ~3.592B visits | ▲ 2.52% MoM
TikTok posted solid gains in May and held its position in the global top 10 for the second consecutive month.
The platform’s sixth annual TikTok World event, held on May 13 in New York City, generated significant attention from advertisers, marketers, and creators. Social Media Today reported a broad wave of product announcements, including AI-powered ad creation tools, a new creator collaboration product called Branded Buzz, an expanded TikTok Shop, Search Hubs for brand-owned search destinations, and TikTok GO’s expansion to the US and Japan for in-app travel booking.
TikTok also launched its Ads MCP Server at the event, allowing AI agents to manage and optimize campaigns directly without human operation through Ads Manager. That kind of infrastructure announcement drives B2B visits to TikTok properties from developers, agencies, and enterprise advertisers evaluating the new tools.
Consumer traffic driven by TikTok World is typically indirect: event coverage reaches creators and marketers who then visit the platform to explore what changed.
Gemini.google.com
#12 Worldwide
💫 ~2.903B visits | ▲ 5.13% MoM
Gemini was the clear AI winner in May, posting a 5.13% gain and remaining comfortably in the top 15 globally.
The driver was Google I/O 2026, held on May 19 in Mountain View. Google described the event as the start of the “Agentic Gemini Era,” and Gemini was the centerpiece of nearly every major announcement. The headline product was Gemini 3.5 Flash, which shipped to general availability the same day it was announced and immediately became the default model in the Gemini app worldwide.
That rollout matters. Unlike a model that requires users to opt in, Gemini 3.5 Flash went live automatically for all Gemini users. Anyone who opened the app after May 19 was already running it. That kind of automatic upgrade brings back lapsed users curious about what changed, while media coverage and developer discussion pull in new visitors.
The I/O keynote also introduced Gemini Spark, a 24/7 personal AI agent, and Gemini Omni, a next-generation multimodal model. Google deepened Gemini’s integration across Search, Android, Chrome, Workspace, and YouTube. According to MarkTechPost, the Gemini app now has over 900 million monthly active users, up from 400 million a year ago.
The combination of a flagship model launch, automatic rollout, and the biggest product event on Google’s calendar produced a traffic result consistent with that scale of investment.
Temu.com
#28 Worldwide
🛒 ~1.196B visits | ▼ 2.37% MoM
Temu declined in May while most of its marketplace peers grew, making it a notable outlier in the ecommerce category this month.
The cause is policy-driven, not seasonal. On May 2, 2025, the United States eliminated the de minimis tariff exemption that had allowed packages valued under $800 to enter the country duty-free. Temu’s growth model was built on that exemption. Business Insider reported that Temu stopped most direct-from-China shipments to US consumers as a direct result, while the Wall Street Journal confirmed the company raised prices and dramatically reduced US advertising spend.
A year later, that forced reset is still working through Temu’s traffic. The platform is shifting toward US-warehouse fulfillment, which changes its cost base and competitive positioning against Amazon and Walmart. Those two platforms grew in May. Temu did not.
The divergence is worth noting for anyone analyzing the marketplace category: growth was broad in May, but Temu’s situation remains distinct from that of every other major player in the top 100.
Twitch.tv
#31 Worldwide
🎮 ~1.011B visits | ▲ 6.53% MoM
Twitch crossed the 1 billion monthly visits mark in May and posted the category’s strongest percentage gain, growing 6.53% month over month.
Viewership data supports the traffic figure. According to Streams Charts, average concurrent viewership increased roughly 4% month over month in May. Hexeum’s monthly recap reported 1.56 billion hours watched across the month and average concurrent viewers reaching approximately 2.1 million, up more than 3% from April.
One pattern in the data is particularly relevant: active channels fell 2% while viewership grew. Viewers concentrated on fewer, larger streams. That kind of consolidation tends to benefit the most-watched creators and the events and games that can hold large audiences, and it typically translates to more time spent on-platform per visit rather than casual browsing across many channels.
Twitch also benefited from May’s gaming calendar, with several major titles in active competitive seasons.
Claude.ai
#36 Worldwide
🤖 ~952.5M visits | ▲ 15.67% MoM
Claude posted the strongest month-over-month gain among all highlighted sites in May, growing 15.67% to approach the 1 billion monthly visit mark.
The primary catalyst was Anthropic’s “Code with Claude” developer conference, held on May 6. The event introduced major upgrades to Claude’s agent capabilities, new developer tooling and workflows, managed agents and multi-agent orchestration, and significant increases to usage limits for developers and enterprises. The claudeapi.com recap noted that expanded compute capacity came alongside a major infrastructure partnership.
Throughout May, Anthropic announced substantially higher limits for Claude Code and Claude Opus users, including doubled Claude Code rate limits and removal of peak-hour restrictions. Claude’s strongest growth segment appears to be software developers, and when usage limits increase, users who previously hit quotas return and use the platform more heavily.
The traffic chart tells that story visually: Claude has been on a steep, nearly uninterrupted upward curve since mid-2025. In terms of AI chatbot web traffic share, Claude has climbed from 1.6% one year ago to 8.9% one month ago, making it the fastest-growing major AI platform over that period.
Roblox.com
#58 Worldwide
🎮 ~554.4M visits | ▲ 5.14% MoM
Roblox grew 5.14% in May, a strong result for a platform that typically sees its biggest traffic in summer months.
Two factors contributed. First, late May marks the start of the school-year wind-down across Roblox’s largest markets. US schools begin ending their academic year in late May, Canada approaches its summer break, and European schools reduce activity heading into holidays. Students have fewer commitments, and time on Roblox tends to increase as a result.
Second, Roblox ran a Memorial Day marketplace event from May 21 to 26, featuring limited-time avatar items and returning collectibles. According to the Roblox fan wiki, the event offered items only available during that window. Roblox users respond directly to scarcity. Limited drops bring collectors, traders, and marketplace-focused users to Roblox.com specifically to browse and purchase, generating visits that go beyond time spent in games.
The Memorial Day weekend itself (May 23 to 25) represented one of the first major school-free weekends heading into summer, which historically correlates with an uptick in gaming activity across platforms targeting younger audiences.
Chat.deepseek.com
#82 Worldwide
🤖 ~375.0M visits | ▲ 11.22% MoM
DeepSeek’s chat product put up an 11.22% gain in May, recovering strongly after months of lower traffic following its January 2025 peak.
The most direct cause was the ongoing attention generated by DeepSeek’s V4 model family, which launched in preview on April 24, 2026. TechCrunch reported that the V4 models closed the gap with frontier competitors while offering a 1 million token context window and substantially lower pricing. That kind of announcement creates a delayed traffic pattern: initial news drives awareness, then developers and enterprise users spend the following weeks testing the product and returning to evaluate performance.
Pricing was a second driver. By late May, The Elec reported that DeepSeek had made a major V4 Pro price reduction permanent, reinforcing its positioning as the cost-efficient alternative to OpenAI and Anthropic. When users hear that a comparable model is available for significantly less, direct visits to the chat product typically follow.
A third factor was a Financial Times report that DeepSeek was raising capital at a valuation of approximately $45 billion. Coverage of that scale tends to send branded search volumes higher, particularly outside of China, where DeepSeek’s name recognition is still building.
CNN.com
#88 Worldwide
📰 ~357.7M visits | ▼ 21.95% MoM
CNN dropped 21.95% in May, the sharpest decline among all 10 highlighted sites and one of the most significant month-over-month falls in the top 100.
The immediate factor is the absence of a major news event driving traffic to CNN specifically. News publishers are highly sensitive to breaking stories and elections. Without a comparable catalyst to April, a pullback is expected.
But the deeper issue is a policy-level one. AI-generated answers and Google AI Overviews now resolve a growing share of news queries directly on the results page, reducing the need for users to click through to publishers. Digiday reported in June 2026 that publishers face a near-impossible choice with Google’s new AI opt-out: opting out of AI Overviews may protect their content, but they risk losing search visibility at a moment when Google is actively directing users toward AI-generated answers rather than sources. One senior publishing executive quoted by Digiday described the situation as “Google treating the internet like their own fiefdom.”
People Inc., one of the largest multi-brand publishers in the US, disclosed in recent earnings that Google sessions from Q1 2024 through Q1 2026 resulted in a total loss of 800 million visits. That number frames what CNN and comparable news publishers are navigating.
Primevideo.com
#98 Worldwide
🎬 ~326.9M visits | ▲ 7.03% MoM
Prime Video posted a 7.03% gain in May, reaching its highest monthly traffic in over a year and breaking into the top 100 globally.
The cause is visible in the May content calendar. Prime Video released a major title nearly every week of the month. Citadel Season 2 launched on May 6, followed by Good Omens Season 3 on May 13, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War on May 20, and Spider-Noir starring Nicolas Cage on May 27. DiscussingFilm confirmed all four release dates, along with Off Campus, which also debuted in mid-May.
Visits spiked on or around each major release date, rather than growing uniformly across the month.
That pattern, multiple discrete spikes across the calendar, is characteristic of a platform where users arrive to watch a specific new title rather than browse.
Spider-Noir, which began streaming on May 27 in all regions and delivered all eight episodes simultaneously, appears to have driven the largest single-week traffic surge of the month. Nicolas Cage’s live-action debut as the character he voiced in Into the Spider-Verse generated significant fan interest ahead of its release.
Trends in May 2026’s global traffic
AI chatbots: a market pulling apart
- ChatGPT: ~5.565B visits | ▲ 0.99% MoM
- Gemini: ~2.903B visits | ▲ 5.13% MoM
- Claude: ~952.5M visits | ▲ 15.67% MoM
- DeepSeek (chat): ~375.0M visits | ▲ 11.22% MoM
- DeepSeek (main): ~430.4M visits | ▲ 4.67% MoM
The AI chatbot category grew across the board in May, but the rates of growth tell very different stories about each platform’s current trajectory.
ChatGPT is effectively flat. It still commands the most absolute traffic of any AI chatbot by a large margin, but its share of the overall AI chatbot market has been falling for over a year. Twelve months ago, ChatGPT held 76.4% of AI chatbot web traffic. One month ago, that figure stood at 52.7%. Gemini has captured most of that lost share, rising from 8.9% to 27.3% over the same period. Claude grew from 1.6% to 8.9%, making it the fastest-growing major platform in the category year-over-year.
May’s results continue that pattern. Gemini’s growth was driven by Google I/O and the automatic rollout of Gemini 3.5 Flash. Claude’s growth was driven by the “Code with Claude” conference and expanded usage limits for developers. DeepSeek’s gain reflected continued post-launch interest in its V4 model family.
The AI chatbot market is no longer winner-takes-all. It is a multi-platform category where each product is growing for different reasons and competing for different user segments.
Ecommerce: broad growth with one outlier
- Amazon.com: ~2.650B visits | ▲ 5.67% MoM
- Temu: ~1.196B visits | ▼ 2.37% MoM
- AliExpress: ~553.7M visits | ▲ 5.47% MoM
- Amazon.in: ~522.2M visits | ▲ 7.53% MoM
- Walmart: ~514.8M visits | ▲ 7.44% MoM
- Etsy: ~434.8M visits | ▲ 4.50% MoM
Ecommerce had a broadly strong month. Amazon grew across all its regional properties. Walmart and Amazon India both posted gains above 7%. AliExpress and Etsy have also advanced.
The exception was Temu. While every other major marketplace in the top 100 grew in May, Temu declined 2.37%. The root cause, the end of the US de minimis exemption in May 2025, and the subsequent rebuild of Temu’s logistics model around US-warehouse fulfillment, is still affecting the platform’s competitive position. Temu’s situation is fundamentally different from its peers’, and the data in May reflects that.
News and media: the referral traffic squeeze tightens
- NYTimes: ~592.6M visits | ▼ 6.67% MoM
- BBC.co.uk: ~546.1M visits | ▲ 7.61% MoM
- BBC.com: ~467.5M visits | ▼ 7.34% MoM
- CNN: ~357.7M visits | ▼ 21.95% MoM
- MSN: ~452.1M visits | ▲ 3.15% MoM
News traffic in May was split. BBC UK grew on the back of strong domestic coverage. MSN held roughly flat. But CNN posted one of the steepest single-month declines in the entire top 100.
The divergence reflects both event-driven effects and the ongoing change in how people find news. Google AI Overviews now answer a growing share of news-related queries without sending users to the source. That trend is accelerating. Publishers like CNN that rely heavily on Google referral traffic are absorbing the impact directly, and there is no sign that the dynamic will reverse.
Social networks: stable and broadly growing
- Facebook: ~11.75B visits | ▲ 2.87% MoM
- Instagram: ~7.41B visits | ▲ 5.20% MoM
- Reddit: ~4.36B visits | ▲ 4.25% MoM
- X: ~4.20B visits | ▲ 3.28% MoM
- TikTok: ~3.59B visits | ▲ 2.52% MoM
- Pinterest: ~1.51B visits | ▲ 5.60% MoM
Social platforms grew across the board in May, with growth rates generally in the 2% to 6% range. In a month with no calendar lift to explain the gains, this reflects genuine growth in social media usage.
Instagram and Pinterest led the category on percentage terms, consistent with a broader pattern of image-forward platforms growing faster than text-forward ones. TikTok held its top 10 position for the second consecutive month, a sign that its US operational stability earlier this year has not disrupted its global traffic trajectory. Reddit’s continued growth, up 21% year-over-year, reflects its expanding role as a search destination in its own right, particularly for queries where users want a first-person experience rather than curated editorial.

FAQs
What is the most visited website in the world in May 2026?
Google.com is the most visited website in the world in May 2026, with approximately 87.5 billion monthly visits. It has held the top position consistently for years and continues to grow its lead as more users engage with AI-powered search features on the platform.
Why is ChatGPT’s traffic growing more slowly than other AI platforms?
ChatGPT still receives more monthly visits than any other AI chatbot by a wide margin, but its share of AI chatbot web traffic has been declining. Gemini, Claude, and DeepSeek are all growing faster in percentage terms, reflecting competitive product launches, expanded features, and new user segments. ChatGPT’s web traffic share fell from 76.4% one year ago to around 52.7% one month ago. The market is no longer one platform to dominate.
Why did CNN’s traffic fall so sharply in May?
CNN dropped 21.95% month over month in May. The immediate cause is the absence of a major breaking news event comparable to the prior month. The deeper cause is a policy-level one: Google AI Overviews and AI Mode resolve an increasing share of news-related queries directly on the search results page, reducing clicks to publisher websites. This is a category-wide challenge, not specific to CNN.
How does Similarweb measure global web traffic?
Similarweb estimates monthly visits using a combination of direct measurement from opt-in devices and panels, ISP data, public data sources, and machine learning models. Our methodology covers both desktop and mobile web. Figures are estimates and rounded for presentation.
