The Most Popular Illegal Movie Downloads

It’s summer, a time when people head to the beach, to barbeques, to all manner of outdoor activities and events. But let’s not forget those summer blockbusters, when people everywhere make a beeline to the theater to watch the hottest new multi-million dollar film release.

Or they opt for the alternative. Beating the crowds and saving cash (but breaking the law) to catch their favorite flicks.

It may be illegal, but that doesn’t stop entertainment-hungry would-be moviegoers from doing it. We’re talking about illegal movie downloads, and the practice is more popular than ever. Why? It’s free, and people are lazy. They also want instant gratification, which is part of the appeal – watch the hot new blockbuster film release right this second, without ever having to leave the comfort of your couch.

So what movies are the most popular right now with illegal torrent sites? To find out, we took a look at the 3 most infamous torrent sites – The Pirate Bay, Kickass Torrents, and Torrentz. These were the movies that had the most visits to their torrent download pages.

The top 10 most most popular pirated films on all 3 illegal download sites are pretty similar. Blockbusters such as Fast and Furious 7, Kingsman: The Secret Service, and Avengers: Age of Ultron were featured chart toppers on all 3 lists.  Out of the top 10 most popular movies, the majority were action-adventure films. One surprise was found on Kickass Torrents as the #3 most downloaded movie, 3D disaster film The Quake. Compared to its box-office competitors, The Quake stars a virtually unknown cast. But for summer blockbusters the star is typically the special effects, and on this point The Quake certainly delivers (even without the 3D version, which most likely home viewers won’t be able to view).

Sci-fi films were another popular category for top movie downloads.  Case in point is Project Almanac, which appeared on all 3 lists. Ex Machina was also a popular choice, appearing at #3, #7 and #4 respectively on The Pirate Bay, Kickass Torrents and Torrentz. The cast of this film are also relatively unknown to major audiences, and the suspenseful sci-fi drama defies the blockbuster category. But the film uses some pretty cool special effects and is also well-acted and compelling in its own right, which might be why users are so keen to download.

Then again, the poorly received Jupiter Ascending made the list for top movie downloads on 2 out of the 3 torrent sites. Once again, though, cool special effects and star power always draw crowds (and in this case, couch potatoes).

There were only two comedies that appeared on any of the 3 torrent sites popular downloads lists – Get Hard, starring comedians Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart, and Unfinished Business, with Vince Vaughn, Tom Jones and Dave Franco.  Paul Blart, Mall Cop 2 also appeared at the very bottom of The Pirate Bay’s top movie downloads list. No romantic comedies, dramas or animated films made any of the lists.

We find this interesting because while illegally downloading movies is free and saves a trip to the theater, the wow factor from special effects is lost a little when you’re watching a film on a laptop (or even a flatscreen).  Considering that the majority of these popular downloads were action or sci-fi thrillers, it’s interesting that users opted to download as opposed to seeing them in a theater. But for many users, it’s about convenience (and cost free) entertainment over a quality movie experience.
