Which marketplace makes the most sense for my company?<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re using the Similarweb <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/corp\/web\/\">Web Intelligence<\/a> platform and our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/corp\/shopper\/\">Shopper Intelligence<\/a> platform to help you determine the best marketplace for you.<\/p>\n<p>So, selling on Target vs. Walmart \u2013 let the eCommerce battle commence.<\/p>\n<h2>What\u2019s the difference between Target and Walmart?<\/h2>\n<p>Despite both being established as household names in the eCommerce marketplace, there are a few key differences between Target and Walmart.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/\">website traffic<\/a>, Walmart takes the third spot on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/top-websites\/united-states\/e-commerce-and-shopping\/\">top 10 eCommerce sites in the US<\/a>, whereas Target falls lower on the list, ranking sixth.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of revenue and units sold, Walmart also wins the battle between the two merchants. With help from the Similarweb Shopper Intelligence platform, we can see that over the past year (May 2021 &#8211; May 2022):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Walmart.com sold 4.8 billion units, cashing in $27.6 billion in revenue<\/li>\n<li>Target.com sold 1.4 billion units, bringing in $19.3 billion in revenue<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Another key difference is the process of <strong>becoming a third-party seller<\/strong> on the platforms.<\/p>\n<p>Walmart launched <a href=\"https:\/\/marketplace.walmart.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Walmart Marketplace<\/a> in 2009<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The platform now has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zentail.com\/blog\/walmart-marketplace-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">over 130K third party-sellers<\/a>, with thousands more joining every month.<\/li>\n<li>The vast amount of sellers generates high revenues on Walmart but also means there is fierce competition to sell your stock as customers have a plethora of pages to search through and products to choose between.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Target launched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.target.com\/c\/target-plus\/-\/N-0mjxk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Target Plus<\/a> in 2019<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Target stands out from its competitors by operating on an exclusive, invite-only system for third-party sellers, focusing on trusted, handpicked brands.<\/li>\n<li>Target Plus is so exclusive that there are only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketplacepulse.com\/articles\/target-is-not-scaling-its-marketplace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">450 sellers<\/a> listed on the site, with around a dozen joining every month.<\/li>\n<li>Despite the challenge of listing your products on Target, being a third-party seller on the platform will prove your brand is reputable and trustworthy. It\u2019s also a less competitive space than Walmart, as customers have fewer products to choose from.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Let the data talk \u2013 Target vs. Walmart:<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Overall, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/walmart.com\/\">walmart.com is the traffic winner<\/a>.<\/strong> The site brought in 5.6 billion total visits in the US between May 2021 &#8211; May 2022. In comparison, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/target.com\/\">target.com<\/a> had 2.6 billion total visits in the same period. However, Target earns more pages per visit and has a lower bounce rate.<\/p>\n<p>The data shows that by listing on Walmart, your brand is likely to gain a lot of exposure to new audiences daily, whereas with Target your brand will attract a more loyal audience.<\/p>\n<p>Device split is also an important metric to keep an eye on. If you have a strong mobile presence and also tailor to users on desktop, then both of these marketplaces are suitable for your brand. As you can see in the chart above, Target attracts a younger audience than Walmart.<\/p>\n<h3>Marketing channels<\/h3>\n    <div class=\"js-infographic-script\" data-id=\"infogram_0_908ea9f0-8401-43e1-8bea-b9005742c56f\" data-title=\"marketing channel performance target vs walmart\" data-src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed.js?7Ab\"><\/div>\n\n<p>Direct marketing is the main source of traffic for both Target and Walmart, sending 525.6 million and one billion visits to each site respectively from May 2021 &#8211; May 2022. Both sites fall way above the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/ecommerce\/retail-insights\/ecommerce-benchmarks-metrics\/\">eCommerce industry benchmark<\/a> of 9.7 million visits.<\/p>\n<p>When accounting for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/marketing\/marketing-strategy\/traffic-share\/\">traffic share<\/a> across all marketing channels, <a href=\"https:\/\/support.similarweb.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/4770707469201-Direct-Traffic\">direct traffic<\/a> brings target just over half of its traffic share with 50.8%, and Walmart just under half of its traffic with 48%.<\/p>\n<p>Organic traffic is the second driver of traffic for both sites, bringing Target 29.8% and Walmart 30.8% of traffic share, both just above the industry standard of 29.4%.<\/p>\n<h2>Top categories<\/h2>\n<p>Whilst the metrics show Walmart is the most profitable, this doesn\u2019t necessarily mean it\u2019s the best place to list your products.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-128986 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/target-vs-walmart-images.png\" alt=\"Top 15 performing categories on Target and Walmart May 2021 - May 2022 \" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/target-vs-walmart-images.png 960w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/target-vs-walmart-images-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/target-vs-walmart-images-768x432.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For items that fall under groceries, household essentials, and home, there\u2019s not much difference between which marketplace you choose to list on. However, Target is more focused on beauty products whereas Walmart is more focused on health.<\/p>\n<h2>Selling requirements: Which suits you best?<\/h2>\n<h3>Selling fees<\/h3>\n<p>Walmart Marketplace:<\/p>\n<p>To sell on Walmart there are no setup or monthly fees. Instead, Walmart operates on a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/marketplace.walmart.com\/guide-to-walmart-marketplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pay for what you sell<\/a>\u201d service, with a referral fee deducted from each purchase.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/marketplace.walmart.com\/referral-fees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Referral fees<\/a> vary by category and are determined by the product types you choose when listing your items. Whilst each category has its own commission rates, they range between 6% to 15%.<\/p>\n<p>Target Plus:<\/p>\n<p>Similar to Walmart Marketplace, Target has no hidden charges or fulfillment fees. Sellers just pay a <a href=\"https:\/\/thriveagency.com\/target-plus-marketplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">commission rate or referral fee<\/a> that falls between 5% to 15%.<\/p>\n<h3>Shipping and fulfillment<\/h3>\n<p>Walmart Marketplace:<\/p>\n<p>A core requirement of selling on Walmart Marketplace is to have a fast and predictable fulfillment network. With its <a href=\"https:\/\/marketplace.walmart.com\/twoday-and-threeday-delivery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TwoDay and ThreeDay<\/a> seller programs, your products will stand out in customer search results.<\/p>\n<p>On top of this, Walmart has launched <a href=\"https:\/\/marketplace.walmart.com\/walmart-fulfillment-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS)<\/a>. With WFS, you send your inventory to a Walmart Fulfillment Center where they store, pack, and ship your orders \u2013 guaranteed to be delivered to customers within two days. Added bonus: Walmart handles customer care for you.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re unable to organize fast shipping, Walmart might be the most convenient marketplace for you.<\/p>\n<p>Target Plus:<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, Target Plus does not have a fulfillment service for third-party sellers, so merchants are required to <a href=\"https:\/\/feedonomics.com\/blog\/target-plus-target-seller-faqs-to-get-you-started\/#:~:text=All%20sellers%20must%20have%20a,no%20longer%20than%205%20days.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ship their own products<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>All orders must be shipped within 24 hours after purchase, and arrive to the customer within five days. Although this might drive customers to find a site that guarantees faster delivery, this is your chance to stand out in the Target marketplace.
