There are labor shortages. The supply chain has shortages. COVID-19 is <i>still<\/i> here. But in-person learning seems to be back on the rise. Basically, things are weird.<\/p>\n<p>So, how are parents and students handling back-to-school shopping during this slow-burn apocalypse?<\/p>\n<p>As a marketer (and a curious mom of two), I decided to find out. Here\u2019s what I discovered.<\/p>\n<p>*Spoiler alert*\u00a0 Three key insights I found are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">The brand Mead has sold the highest-selling product.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">The top-selling products are overarchingly gender-neutral essentials.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Many big-name, trusted brands still win in terms of total unit sales.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Inflation impacts back-to-school shopping too<\/h2>\n<p>Despite many families tightening their belt buckles, back-to-school shopping spending is up. And, inflation is primarily to blame. <b>NRF found that categorically prices for school necessities have risen year over year.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-133672\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/back-to-school-inflation.png\" alt=\"Back to school 2022 inflation.\" width=\"1208\" height=\"704\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/back-to-school-inflation.png 1208w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/back-to-school-inflation-300x175.png 300w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/back-to-school-inflation-1024x597.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/back-to-school-inflation-768x448.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1208px) 100vw, 1208px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It makes sense that families are spending more money on school shopping given the rise in prices, because what\u2019s the alternative?<\/p>\n<p>Kids&#8217; school necessities are <i>have-to-haves<\/i>, so while people might be able to cut back on other areas, like dining out, and travel they cannot do that for back to school.<\/p>\n<h2>The list keeps growing<\/h2>\n<p>The first possible reason: the list is just bigger this year as at-home learning has been prevalent since 2020. What that means is, the basics that kids use year to year (think: lunch boxes, backpacks, pencil cases, workbooks) haven\u2019t been used as much over the past two years so as in-person learning resumes, parents need to buy them.<\/p>\n<p>Another contributing factor is the emergence of new learning technology and teaching methods. Coupled with how much other new stuff kids need for school, like seasonal clothes and shoes, most families are finding their list seems to have grown.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s an example of a general supply list for one high school student. Take a look and consider what it<i> doesn\u2019t <\/i>include such as clothing items and teacher-specific lists, and then possibly multiply that by several kids\u2026<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-133673\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/back-to-school-shopping-list.png\" alt=\"Example back to school shopping list.\" width=\"626\" height=\"792\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/back-to-school-shopping-list.png 626w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/back-to-school-shopping-list-237x300.png 237w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 626px) 100vw, 626px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Price beats brand loyalty<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s no secret people are looking to save money, especially since the global economy is down. Intuitively, this means shoppers are <a href=\"https:\/\/zetaglobal.com\/resource-center\/articles\/back-to-school-shopping\/\">less likely to be loyal to a given brand<\/a>, and more likely to buy whatever\u2019s least expensive.<\/p>\n<p>The bad news? That means marketers can\u2019t rely as heavily on repeat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/\">website traffic<\/a> and returning customers.<\/p>\n<p>The good news? It\u2019s a great time to offer a flashy deal and win some new shoppers.<\/p>\n<h2>Buying in bulk is big<\/h2>\n<p>I\u2019ll admit it. This trend initially came from my \u2018momstinct\u2019, but turns out I was right. When people are saving money they tend to buy products in bulk. Yes, for back-to-school shopping too.<\/p>\n<p>When I checked the keyword \u201cbulk\u201d on Similarweb Shopper Intelligence\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/corp\/search\/features\/keyword-analysis\/\">keyword analysis tool<\/a>, school-related products that are sold in bulk have experienced a whopping growth. Moda West padded backpacks saw a jaw-dropping 8,600% MoM increase from June to July 2022. One reason this 24-pack of backpacks is flying off the shelf is possible because groups of parents are buying for multiple kids together &#8211; such as cousins and close friends.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-133675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/buying-in-bulk-for-back-to-school.png\" alt=\"Buying in bulk for back to school.\" width=\"1705\" height=\"841\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/buying-in-bulk-for-back-to-school.png 1705w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/buying-in-bulk-for-back-to-school-300x148.png 300w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/buying-in-bulk-for-back-to-school-1024x505.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/buying-in-bulk-for-back-to-school-768x379.png 768w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/buying-in-bulk-for-back-to-school-1536x758.png 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1705px) 100vw, 1705px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>In-store shopping is popular (again)<\/h2>\n<p>A Deloitte survey found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/us\/en\/insights\/industry\/retail-distribution\/back-to-school-survey.html?id=us:2ps:3gl:dius175490:eng:cons:071522:online\">49% of parents<\/a> plan to do the majority of their shopping in-store. I don\u2019t know about you, but I did not expect that.<\/p>\n<p>For the past few years, the trend has leaned heavily towards online shopping, so the move back to in-store is surprising. However, it could be related to the labor shortages that have led to increased shipping times for most items. It\u2019s also easier for many shoppers to find similar products if the item they need is out of stock when they visit a store in person.<\/p>\n<h2>But, what are people actually buying?<\/h2>\n<p>The NFR predicts the average family will spend about $15 more on back-to-school shopping this year than last. <b>That means this industry is expected to make about $37 billion this season. This is where all that money is going.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h2>Top categories<\/h2>\n<p>Looking at month-over-month revenue growth, devices, software, and electronics claim the top three spots with increases of 519%, 466%, and 45%, respectively.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-133676\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Top-categories-Amazon-back-to-school.png\" alt=\"Top back to school categoreis based on Amazon spend.\" width=\"1692\" height=\"814\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Top-categories-Amazon-back-to-school.png 1692w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Top-categories-Amazon-back-to-school-300x144.png 300w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Top-categories-Amazon-back-to-school-1024x493.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Top-categories-Amazon-back-to-school-768x369.png 768w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Top-categories-Amazon-back-to-school-1536x739.png 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1692px) 100vw, 1692px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However, if we look at the change in total product views, clothing skyrockets to the top with upwards of 3.6 billion. This interestingly shows that shoppers are looking more at clothes, but spending more on devices.<\/p>\n<p>Is that in line with back-to-school shopping trends? I dare say so. So, that\u2019s what I decided to investigate.<\/p>\n<p>A quick look at the keyword \u201cback to school\u201d in our Amazon Keyword Analysis tool shows massive month-over-month growth.
