The private company behind Notion is\u00a0enjoying being cash flow positive and able to make acquisitions at a time when the free flow of venture capital money has slowed. Here are some measures of how this mashup of a wiki, a database, a business collaboration tool, and a personal productivity and note-taking tool has captured the web\u2019s love and attention.<\/p>\n<h2>Key takeaways<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/notion.so\/\">Traffic to notion.so<\/a> was up 40% year over year in July to 123 million visits, according to Similarweb estimates. That\u2019s a slight slowdown from the triple-digit traffic gains of 2021, but it\u2019s four times the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/evernote.com\/\">traffic flowing to evernote.com<\/a>, the site of an established leader in the note-taking\/personal organizer software category.<\/li>\n<li>Traffic to the onboarding segment of notion.so, a good place to track the influx of new users getting oriented on how to use Notion, continues to grow by double-digits, year over year \u2013 although no longer at the triple-digit rates of late 2020 to early 2021. Desktop traffic to the onboarding page was up 12.6% year over year in July.<\/li>\n<li>As of July 2022, notion.so was attracting more traffic than other\u00a0online collaboration tools such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/slack.com\/\">slack.com<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/trello.com\/\">trello.com<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/asana.com\/\">asana.com<\/a>, and many other SaaS domains for communication and collaboration apps.<\/li>\n<li>The growth story on mobile is not as clear. On Android, the metrics for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/research\/apps\/daily-active-users\/\">daily active users<\/a> were flat to down slightly for Notion in July \u2013 although competitor Evernote has seen steadier erosion of its audience, with daily active users down nearly 20% in July.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/U6uHFnLLHrQ\" width=\"100%\" height=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>Rapid ascent in web traffic<\/h2>\n<p>Web traffic to notion.so has been climbing steadily, representing both new and prospective user visits and active use of the application. Notion has desktop clients for Windows and Mac, as well as for mobile, but can also be used as a browser-based app \u2013 making it convenient for those who sign in from work and home, using both personal and company-owned devices.<\/p>\n<p>Although Notion has ambitions as an enterprise online collaboration tool for teams, one of the things that have made it popular is its wealth of tools for both personal productivity and professional organization and planning.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-134125 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/corp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/notion_1-600x371-1.png\" alt=\"Notion traffic growth compared with personal productivity tools\" width=\"600\" height=\"371\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/notion_1-600x371-1.png 600w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/notion_1-600x371-1-300x186.png 300w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/notion_1-600x371-1-512x317.png 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Competitors often mentioned as similar to Notion barely register on the chart above.<\/p>\n<h2>Flexible and powerful<\/h2>\n<p>Notion makes it easy to store and organize information in many different ways. During the research for this report, we used it to capture clippings about the app (and other topics) from many different sources.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-134126\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/corp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/notion_2-600x337-1.png\" alt=\"Notion web client\" width=\"600\" height=\"337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/notion_2-600x337-1.png 600w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/notion_2-600x337-1-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/notion_2-600x337-1-512x288.png 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>A standout among SaaS Collaboration apps<\/h2>\n<p>Notion\u2019s ascent also compares favorably to many other collaboration and productivity app domains, as of July ranking ahead of trello.com, asana.com, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/monday.com\/\">monday.com<\/a>, as well as slightly ahead of slack.com (not shown on the chart below because Similarweb classifies it as Communication rather than Collaboration).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-134127 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/corp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/notion_3-600x371-1.png\" alt=\"Notion compared with other online collaboration tools\" width=\"600\" height=\"371\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/notion_3-600x371-1.png 600w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/notion_3-600x371-1-300x186.png 300w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/notion_3-600x371-1-512x317.png 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>New user onboarding growing, but more slowly<\/h2>\n<p>There are multiple ways of signing up for Notion, but every new desktop user lands on a set of onboarding pages providing examples of all the ways the tool can be put to work. The traffic growth story for this segment is also impressive (Similarweb Platform users can <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.similarweb.com\/#\/digitalsuite\/segments\/analysis\/single\/3333310b-d4f9-414e-b154-cc7b8de7b640\/840\/2020.01-2022.07\">see it here<\/a>). In late 2020 and early 2021, year-over-year traffic gains often topped 200% or even 300%. Those days are gone, but onboarding traffic still grew nearly 40% in February, and in July the year-over-year gain was 12.6%.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-134128 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/corp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/notion_4-600x371-1.png\" alt=\"Onboarding traffic for Notion's personal productivity and online collaboration tool\" width=\"600\" height=\"371\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/notion_4-600x371-1.png 600w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/notion_4-600x371-1-300x186.png 300w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/notion_4-600x371-1-512x317.png 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Numbers are not as favorable on mobile<\/h2>\n<p>Perhaps because it performs so well on the desktop, where the user has the opportunity to spread out and see more of the content they\u2019ve gathered at a glance, Notion seems to be struggling to achieve performance as strong on mobile.<\/p>\n<p>On Android, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/app\/google-play\/com.evernote\/statistics\/\">Evernote<\/a> still claims more than four times as many daily active users, even though for Evernote that active audience seems to be declining.<\/p>\n<p>By year-over-year comparisons, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/app\/google-play\/notion.id\/statistics\/\">DAU trend for Notion<\/a> has been as positive as a 114% gain in daily active users in January and as negative as a 46% drop in April. In July, the trend in daily active users was essentially flat (down 0.07%) \u2013 at about 182,00, compared with over 759,000 for Evernote.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-134129\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/corp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/notion_5-600x345-1.png\" alt=\"Notion daily active users on Android\" width=\"600\" height=\"345\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/notion_5-600x345-1.png 600w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/notion_5-600x345-1-300x173.png 300w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/notion_5-600x345-1-512x294.png 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Still winning fans after years of growth<\/h2>\n<p>Notion has been on the market for six years, growing slowly but steadily. Within the timeframe we studied, it posted year-over-year traffic gains of over 100% and some months over 350% from Aug. 2020 to November 2021.
