The singer herself echoed the outrage expressed by her fans, and the incident may even trigger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/11\/18\/technology\/live-nation-ticketmaster-investigation-taylor-swift.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">closer regulatory scrutiny<\/a> of the market dominance of Ticketmaster and parent company Live Nation.<\/p>\n<h2>Key takeaways<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>As Taylor Swift fans (\u201cSwifties\u201d) rushed to take advantage of a pre-sale ticket offer on November 15, ticketmaster.com saw about 12.3 million visits, or 3.5 times as much traffic as on an average day, according to Similarweb estimates. The website crashed, and Ticketmaster canceled plans for subsequent day sales for lack of remaining inventory.<\/li>\n<li>Ticketmaster had gotten a preview of what was coming on November 1 when plans for the Taylor Swift tour were announced and fans were told they would have to register in advance as part of a \u201cverified fans\u201d program to even be eligible to buy tickets on November 15. That event attracted 8.2 million visitors and also prompted widespread complaints that the website was failing to meet the demand.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Two traffic peaks in two weeks<\/h2>\n<p>Ticketmaster got two weeks warning of the traffic that crushed its website with the initial tour announcement, which got Swifties rushing to make sure they were pre-registered as part of a \u201cverified fans\u201d program that is supposed to prevent bots from dominating ticket buying. But the traffic that followed when tickets became available for purchase on Nov. 15 was another 50% larger.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-140703 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/swift_1.png\" alt=\"Ticketmaster.com traffic and Taylor Swift\" width=\"1200\" height=\"742\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the Nov. 1 surge, Swift fans took to Twitter to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JohnFischesser\/status\/1587489442452934659\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">decry<\/a> the poor experience.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-140704 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/swift_2.png\" alt=\"Taylor Swift fan tweeting about long line in ticketmaster.com\" width=\"886\" height=\"390\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Verified fans traffic<\/h2>\n<p>Pages related to the Verified Fans program, as in how to join it, saw a particularly sharp increase on November 1.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-140705 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/corp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/swift_3.png\" alt=\"Ticketmaster verified fan program\" width=\"1200\" height=\"742\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Ticketmaster\u2019s Explanation<\/h2>\n<p>Under the heading, \u201cThe Demand For Tickets To Taylor\u2019s Tour Broke Records \u2013 And Parts Of Our Website,\u201d the company explained, \u201cHistorically, we\u2019ve been able to manage huge volume coming into the site to shop for tickets, so those with Verified Fan codes have a smooth shopping process. However, this time the staggering number of bot attacks, as well as fans who didn\u2019t have codes, drove unprecedented traffic on our site, resulting in 3.5 billion total system requests \u2013 4x our previous peak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The issue wasn\u2019t just the number of visits but the velocity of transactions, according to the company. \u201cOverall, we estimate about 15% of interactions across the site experienced issues, and that\u2019s 15% too many, including passcode validation errors that caused fans to lose tickets they had carted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the disruptions, Ticketmaster says over 2 million tickets were sold, or \u201cthe most tickets ever sold for an artist in a single day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s of little comfort to the fans who were unable to buy tickets when the website was failing, however.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Similarweb Insights &amp; Communications team is available to pull additional or updated data on request for the news media (journalists are invited to write to <a href=\"mailto:press@similarweb.com\">press@similarweb.com<\/a>).
