From a simple prompt, ChatGPT, the latest AI bot from OpenAI, the people who brought us the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/insights\/ai-news\/dall-e-image-generator-generates-attention-for-openai\/\">Dall-E image generator<\/a>, will write an essay, or a JavaScript routine, or any number of other creative works that can be expressed in text.<\/p>\n<p>A friend asked it to create a children\u2019s story based on the Art of War. My boss talked it into writing lyrics to a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rrrrrj\/status\/1600306763705761792?s=46&amp;t=QrfaafMj1QFhIFqE4rpM2Q\">song in the style of Taylor Swift<\/a> about her recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/insights\/ecommerce-news\/taylor-swift-ticketmaster\/\">misadventures with Ticketmaster<\/a>. I had it write a programming function for calculating the dates of the Jewish holidays.<\/p>\n<p>A social media sensation thanks to so many people sharing something cool that the bot created on their behalf, ChatGPT is creating mainstream attention for OpenAI, a research lab that prior to this year was best known by computing industry insiders.<\/p>\n<h2>Key takeaways<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>On December 3, just a few days after the November 30 announcement of a free open beta of ChatGPT, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/openai.com\/\">openai.com<\/a> attracted nearly 2.5 million web visits. Traffic to the website had been building since the release of Dall-E 2 in June, but the previous daily peak for the year was just under 1 million visits. (<strong>Update:<\/strong> traffic continued to rise after we published our initial report to nearly 6.7 million visits on Dec. 6).<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/chat.openai.com\/\">chat.openai.com<\/a> subdomain for the tool drew more than 5 million visits on Dec. 6 and traffic seems likely to to continue rising.<\/li>\n<li>Search for information about the tool also exploded, with most searchers clicking straight through to openai.com.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>A new high for OpenAI<\/h2>\n<p>Here is how traffic has grown, overall, for the openai.com website.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-141607 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/chatgpt_1.png\" alt=\"chart showing rise in traffic this year with huge spike on Dec. 3\" width=\"1316\" height=\"742\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/chatgpt_1.png 1316w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/chatgpt_1-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/chatgpt_1-1024x577.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/chatgpt_1-768x433.png 768w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/chatgpt_1-512x289.png 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1316px) 100vw, 1316px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Most of that traffic flowed to ChatGPT at chat.openai.com where people were busy experimenting with what they could get the tool to do.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-141763\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/OpenAI-and-ChatGPT-1.png\" alt=\"OpenAI and ChatGPT\" width=\"600\" height=\"371\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/OpenAI-and-ChatGPT-1.png 600w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/OpenAI-and-ChatGPT-1-300x186.png 300w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/OpenAI-and-ChatGPT-1-512x317.png 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, searches on ChatGPT and related terms also surged, with most search traffic flowing straight to openai.com.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-141609 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/chatgpt_3.png\" alt=\"chart showing rise of search on ChatGPT\" width=\"703\" height=\"568\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/chatgpt_3.png 703w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/chatgpt_3-300x242.png 300w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/chatgpt_3-512x414.png 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 703px) 100vw, 703px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>What\u2019s so exciting?<\/h2>\n<p>OpenAI is a San Francisco-based artificial intelligence research lab that includes a for-profit deep learning company, which in turn is owned by a nonprofit corporation focused on finding positive applications of AI technologies.<\/p>\n<p>ChatGPT is built on OpenAI\u2019s Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3 (GPT-3) model for teaching computers to understand (or appear to understand) human language and produce meaningful responses to questions or prompts. Dall-E uses the same technology as the starting point for generating synthetic images, whereas ChatGPT responds with text. The two can be used together.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the enthusiasm for ChatGPT comes from programmers and other technologists who can use the tool as an alternative to searching StackOverflow for the solution to a problem.
