But the decade-old company is no longer the shiny new thing in retail trading, and both web and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/app\/\">app engagement stats<\/a> have been falling.<\/p>\n<p>During some frenzied (and controversial) peaks of activity in 2021, Robinhood\u2019s primary app for Android attracted nearly 10 million <a href=\"https:\/\/support.similarweb.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/6450621690769-Monthly-Active-Users\">monthly active users<\/a>. In March, it had 2.7 million Android users, according to Similarweb estimates. Other once-hot retail investing companies, particularly those associated with crypto, are also in a downturn, and Robinhood looks better (not great, but better) in comparison with crypto pure-plays like Coinbase.<\/p>\n<p>Robinhood Markets, Inc. (NASDAQ: HOOD), which has scheduled a first-quarter earnings announcement for May 10, gets 94.7% of its web traffic from the US, so we\u2019ve focused our analysis on the competitive landscape there. We use Android as our primary indicator of app usage trends, but the patterns are similar for iOS.<\/p>\n<h2>Key takeaways<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>In Q1, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/app\/google-play\/com.robinhood.android\/statistics\/\">usage of Robinhood\u2019s mobile app<\/a> was down 34%, judging by Similarweb estimates of monthly active users on Android. That\u2019s better than the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/app\/google-play\/com.coinbase.android\/statistics\/\">Coinbase app<\/a> (-51.5%) but worse than, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/app\/google-play\/com.fidelity.android\/statistics\/\">Fidelity app stats<\/a> (-10.9%) or E*TRADE (-24%). In general, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/top-apps\/google\/finance\/\">trading app usage<\/a> seems to be in a slump.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/robinhood.com\/\">Website visits to robinhood.com<\/a> were down 36.8% in Q1. Again, that\u2019s better than Coinbase (-51%), Binance US (-42.2%), or eToro (another retail trading plus crypto service, -48.7%). More established retail trading brands also saw a decline, but less of one: for example Fidelity (-7.5%), Schwab (-4.8%), and Edward Jones (-4.7%). However, traffic to TD Ameritrade was down 24.7% for the quarter.<\/li>\n<li>Robinhood\u2019s share of web traffic, in comparison including Fidelity, Charles Schwab, TD Ameritrade, Vanguard, eTrade, and Edward Jones, dropped by 3.3 points, while Fidelity gained 2.9 points.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Losing app engagement<\/h2>\n<p>Robinhood\u2019s initial claim to fame was that its app provided easy access to commission-free trades of stocks and other securities, but the app is not engaging users the way it once did.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-146904\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Robinhood-and-Key-Competitors-Mobile-Apps.png\" alt=\"chart: year over year change in usage, trading apps on Android\" the trend looks like over the past few years, with the surge in 2021 entangled with controversy over meme stocks and how the company handled trading with them \u2013 for which it has already faced regulatory penalties.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-146903\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Robinhood-and-Selected-Competitors.png\" alt=\"chart: Robinhood and selected competitors on Android\" width=\"600\" enjoys more app engagement than competitors like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/app\/google-play\/com.etrade.mobilepro.activity\/statistics\/\">E*TRADE app<\/a>, some of the engagement tactics it has employed, such as gamification of the trading experience, have also been at the center of its controversies.\u00a0 The company is currently defending itself against charges in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/robinhood-securities-regulators-face-off-over-massachusetts-fiduciary-rule-2023-05-03\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lawsuit brought by the state of Massachusetts<\/a>, where one of the accusations is that the company took advantage of novice investors by making the \u201cgame\u201d a little too fun.<\/p>\n<h2>Robinhood in the context of retail trading<\/h2>\n<p>In Q1, Robinhood saw the biggest loss of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/\">web traffic<\/a> of any of these retail trading services.<\/p>\n<p><img player in total US web traffic, well behind <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/fidelity.com\/\">traffic leader Fidelity<\/a> but at about the same level as E*TRADE.<\/p>\n<p><img trading and crypto<\/h2>\n<p>Compared with competitors more purely in the crypto space, Robinhood\u2019s fall in traffic is not outside the norm \u2013 and not as bad as for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/coinbase.com\/\">Coinbase.com<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/binance.com\/\">traffic to Binance<\/a>. On the other hand, it helps that they are more diversified than the pure-play crypto companies. And Robinhood continues to look for the upside in the crypto space, recently releasing a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyhodl.com\/2023\/04\/28\/retail-trading-giant-robinhood-launches-new-crypto-on-ramp-to-boost-web3-access\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">new app that aims to simplify access to web3 assets<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Robinhood remains a player in a tough market<\/h2>\n<p>A report from Zacks suggests <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/articles\/robinhood-markets-inc.-hood-expected-to-beat-earnings-estimates:-should-you-buy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Robinhood\u2019s stock could rise if it beats consensus estimates<\/a> &#8211; which is not to predict a turnaround or a big move toward profitability, just that the earnings might not be as bad as some are expecting. That\u2019s sort of what we see in the web and app trends. Not great.
