Seeing a site gaining traffic and eventually, organic conversions is a really rewarding experience.<\/p>\n<p>However, there was one thing I never got to work on.<\/p>\n<p>A brand new site.<\/p>\n<p>When I finally got my hands on one I discovered\u2026<\/p>\n<p>It took ages to get any traction.<\/p>\n<p>I discovered there are some concrete steps you can take that will set your site up for success.<\/p>\n<p>Getting this right in the beginning, will substantially speed up your site\u2019s progress and get you out of the sandbox as quickly as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s get started\u2026<\/p>\n<h2>SEO Checklist for New Websites<\/h2>\n<p>The steps to getting your site off the ground can be broken up into three main categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Carefully plan your site structure<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Create well-structured content that targets low-competition keywords<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Build quality links<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>1. Plan Your Site Structure<\/h3>\n<p>Planning your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/marketing\/seo\/site-architecture-for-seo\/\">site\u2019s structure<\/a> is possibly the most important step in getting a new site off on the right foot.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, it should be done right in the beginning. Although you can possibly fix a bad site structure later on in the process if you have hundreds or even thousands of URLs the job might be enormous.<\/p>\n<p>Also, getting this wrong could result in poor rankings.<\/p>\n<h4>Why is Site Architecture Important?<\/h4>\n<p>There are a number of reasons to have a solid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/marketing\/seo\/site-architecture-for-seo\/\">site architecture<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Firstly, a clear and simple architecture helps spiders easily crawl your site. This will ensure that all of your pages are findable and indexable.<\/p>\n<p>Google will have difficulty crawling:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Pages that are many clicks away from your home page<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Pages that are not linked to by any other page<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Also, having a clear site structure will result in many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/marketing\/seo\/internal-links\/\">internal links<\/a> pointing to your high-priority pages, which will signal to Google that these are important pages. This may boost their authority which could, in turn, improve their rankings.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the biggest reason to have a clear site architecture is it makes your site more user-friendly. Providing a good user experience within a clear structure will help users easily find whatever content they are looking for.<\/p>\n<p>A great user experience could result in your readers turning into fans which should result in them coming back to your site again and again.<\/p>\n<p>Now that we understand the benefits of site structure, let\u2019s get into how to get started.<\/p>\n<h4>How to Set up Your Site Architecture for More Traffic<\/h4>\n<p>The key to effective site architecture is to create a hierarchy. In other words, your most important pages should be at the top of the hierarchy working your way down to the least most important.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine your site structure in three tiers. The top tier should be your homepage. Under that should be separate pages for each of your services. If your business doesn\u2019t have services, these top pages should be category pages.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, if you run a digital marketing agency, the top of the hierarchy should be your home page.<\/p>\n<p>The next level down should be all of your different services.<\/p>\n<p>This could be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">SEO<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Google Ads<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Social Media Marketing<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Email Marketing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/rank-ranger\/blog_6\/new-site-home-page-services.png\" alt=\"Illustration showing homepage linking to services pages\" width=\"1106\" height=\"422\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The next level down is your blog.<\/p>\n<p>These tiers are achieved through the structure of your internal linking. In other words, all of your service pages should link back to your home page. All of your blog posts should link back to your service pages.<\/p>\n<p>Once you have that in place, you should add a further layer of structure by creating content silos.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Create Content Silos<\/h3>\n<p>A content silo is a way to structure your blog. To set one up, you should plan to create blog posts explaining every aspect of your services or categories.<\/p>\n<p>So in the example we saw above, the site had an SEO service page and a Google Ads service page. To create a content silo around SEO, you could create many blog posts covering different aspects of SEO.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some potential blog topic ideas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">How do you win <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/marketing\/seo\/serp-features\/\">SERP features<\/a>?<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">What are the most important Google ranking factors?<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">What are the top five Search Engines?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve written these posts, link them back to the SEO page.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019d do the same for Google Ads, making sure to link back to your Google Ads page.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/rank-ranger\/blog_6\/new-site-silo.png\" alt=\"Illustration showing a content silo around an SEO service page\" width=\"1222\" height=\"732\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This will keep all of your SEO and Google Ads content separate.<\/p>\n<p>Since Google will crawl your content by following your internal links, Google will see your expertise and competence in SEO which will increase your site\u2019s authority on the topic.<\/p>\n<p>Also, as the blog posts gain authority, the internal links pointing to the SEO service page will send authority to that page.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important that your site have a shallow architecture. In other words, make sure that searchers can reach any content in four clicks or less.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Optimize Your Internal Links<\/h3>\n<p>By now you should understand that your site structure is based on how you internally link your pages. However, how the actual links themselves are structured is just as important as the site structure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"325\" data-end=\"348\">Let me break it down.<\/p>\n<h4>What is Internal Linking?<\/h4>\n<p>Internal links are hyperlinks that point to pages on the same site. These links help Google find and index pages on your site. For instance, if you publish a page but don\u2019t link to it from anywhere on your site and if it doesn\u2019t appear in your site map Google simply doesn\u2019t know that it exists. This is called an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/marketing\/seo\/orphan-pages\/\">orphan page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>Build Authority With Internal Links<\/h4>\n<p>More importantly, internal links send authority to the pages the links are pointing to. This is because according to Google the number of links pointing to a page is a signal about the relative importance of that page.<\/p>\n<h4>Use Keyword Rich Anchor Text<\/h4>\n<p>Google uses anchor text to understand the page that the links are pointing to. This means, when building internal links you should use keyword-rich or exact-match anchor text.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to note that when building backlinks this is not recommended. But when it comes to internal links, exact match anchor text won\u2019t hurt your site. Instead, the anchor text will give Google context as to what the page is about.<\/p>\n<p>Once you have your site structure and content strategy planned it\u2019s time to create your actual content.<\/p>\n<h2>Plan Your Content<\/h2>\n<p>Just having a well-structured website is only the first step in your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/marketing\/seo\/seo-strategy\/\">SEO strategy<\/a>. The next step is to plan out your actual content based on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/corp\/search\/features\/keyword-analysis\/\">keyword analysis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Keyword Research<\/h3>\n<p>Now that you understand that your content should fit into your site structure, and your blog posts should be set out in a silo structure, it\u2019s time to actually do some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/marketing\/seo\/keyword-research\/\">keyword research<\/a> to figure out what blog topics to cover.<\/p>\n<p>In order to do this research effectively, you\u2019ll have to research each topic separately. In other words, as in our example above, if you\u2019re looking to boost your Google Ads service page, you should aim to create many blog posts that are designed to cover every aspect of the subject.<\/p>\n<p>To do this could take years, and since many of the topics will have already been covered by high-authority websites, you\u2019ll have to initially look for low-competition keywords. Once you start ranking for these low-competition keywords and seeing a small trickle of traffic, you can start to target keywords that are slightly more competitive.<\/p>\n<p>Enough theorizing, let me show you how&#8230;<\/p>\n<h4>How to Target Low-Competition Keywords<\/h4>\n<p>I\u2019ll be showing you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/marketing\/seo\/low-competition-keywords\/\">how I find low-competition keywords<\/a> using the Similarweb <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/corp\/search\/features\/keyword-generator\/\">Keyword Generator<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When starting my keyword research, I don\u2019t look for granular keywords. Instead, I type the broad topic into the search bar and rely on the tool to generate keyword lists. This will help me find all of the granular data I need.<\/p>\n<p>As you can see in the screenshot below, I typed &#8216;dental exrays&#8217; into the search bar. When I did that the Phrase match report brought me 2387 keywords to choose from. Now since I don\u2019t have forever and a day to look through all of those keywords I need to filter out the irrelevant ones.<\/p>\n<p>To do that simply click the top of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/marketing\/seo\/keyword-difficulty\/\">Keyword Difficulty<\/a> column. When you do that the row will be arranged from most difficult to least difficult.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-152698 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/rearrange-kd-column.jpg\" alt=\"rearrange kd column\" width=\"1190\" height=\"444\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/rearrange-kd-column.jpg 1190w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/rearrange-kd-column-300x112.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/rearrange-kd-column-1024x382.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/rearrange-kd-column-768x287.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/rearrange-kd-column-512x191.jpg 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1190px) 100vw, 1190px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next step is to filter out the keywords without search volume. In the example below I filtered out all the keywords with a search volume lower than 100 monthly searches. I just picked this number at random. You\u2019ll decide what is a search volume that works for you.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-152699 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/search-volume-filter-1.jpg\" alt=\"search volume filter 2\" width=\"1095\" height=\"578\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/search-volume-filter-1.jpg 1095w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/search-volume-filter-1-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/search-volume-filter-1-1024x541.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/search-volume-filter-1-768x405.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/search-volume-filter-1-512x270.jpg 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1095px) 100vw, 1095px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As you can see there are 119 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/marketing\/seo\/long-tail-keywords\/\">long tail keywords<\/a> all with a low keyword difficulty that have a search volume above 100.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to note that you shouldn\u2019t realistically expect keywords with high search volumes. However, if you cover many topics with low search volumes, the clicks will start to add up.<\/p>\n<p>Once your site gets some momentum, you will be able to go after high-volume searches. At this point, you are trying to get your first traffic.<\/p>\n<h3>5. Optimize Your Headings<\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s important to understand that people who read your blog posts often skim them in order to find a point of interest. To help them do that you should have clear <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/marketing\/seo\/heading-tags\/\">SEO headings<\/a> (H2, H3, etc.) that explain what the content in each section is about.<\/p>\n<p>This means keep your headings descriptive.<\/p>\n<p>Ideally, I try to use keywords in my headings. To do this, simply go back to the keyword research tool, type your blog topic into the search, and go to the Questions tab. This will show you a list of keywords structured in the form of questions that can be used as headings.<\/p>\n<p>For headings, don\u2019t worry about search volumes or Keyword Difficulty scores. Instead, look for questions that people are searching Google for that make sense to be answered by your blog post.<\/p>\n<h3>6. Page Title and Meta Descriptions<\/h3>\n<p>This may seem like old-school SEO, but it\u2019s still really important to write good meta tags.<\/p>\n<p>Since you used a keyword research tool to generate your blog topic ideas, you should include this keyword in your title tag.<\/p>\n<p>This is important for two reasons:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Keyword-rich title tags help Google \u2018understand\u2019 what your page is about.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Keywords in title tags help improve your CTRs as users assume they have found what they are looking for.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>You should also include this keyword in your meta description.<\/p>\n<p>Although meta descriptions are not a ranking factor and Google often creates one for you, taking a minute to include your primary keyword in your meta description will show the user that your content answers their question. This could improve your click-through rates.<\/p>\n<h3>7. Optimize Your Images<\/h3>\n<p>Although it might seem obvious, you must include images and if possible video. This can substantially improve your user experience and help keep your audience engaged.<\/p>\n<h4>Image File Sizes<\/h4>\n<p>Images should make the whole page look better and strengthen the text information. Also, make sure your images are unique and avoid using free stock images. Finally, don\u2019t forget to include a descriptive image alt tag.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to make sure your images are high quality, however\u2026<\/p>\n<p>High-resolution images can substantially slow down your page speed. It\u2019s therefore important to reduce the size of your images but only if the quality remains high.<\/p>\n<p>The best way to do this is to compress your images but when doing this, you must make sure to set a level of compression that doesn\u2019t compromise the image quality. This might take some experimentation.<\/p>\n<p>If you have Adobe Photoshop, you can always use the \u2018Save For Web\u2019 option, which will automatically do this for you.<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t have Photoshop you can always use a free tool such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gimp.org\/\">Gimp<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getpaint.net\/\">Paint<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>Image File Names<\/h4>\n<p>When choosing names for your images, use titles that describe your images. Also, include keywords to increase your chances of having your images found in searches.<\/p>\n<h4>Use Alt Tags<\/h4>\n<p>Alt text was designed so that blind people can understand what your image is about. However, search engines crawl your alt text so try to add more detail than what you\u2019ve included in your image title.<\/p>\n<h3>8. Boost Engagement with Video Content<\/h3>\n<p>A great way to improve your SEO is to include video content on your site. The reason is statistics show that pages with video are more likely to attract links and get more engagement.<\/p>\n<p>This means you should include video on your pages wherever it makes sense.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important, however, to only include video content that will enhance the pages it appears on. In other words, if you have an informational blog post targeting the term \u2018How to win SERP features\u2019, include a video on the same page offering information about the same topic.<\/p>\n<p>The reason is many of your visitors would prefer video over written content. Even if they don\u2019t, it\u2019s highly likely that they will still watch the video. Especially if your video promises additional value that is not included in the written content.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/rank-ranger\/blog_6\/new-websites-video-content.jpg\" alt=\"Video camera\" width=\"2508\" height=\"1672\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>9. Scripts and Tracking<\/h3>\n<p>Set up your tracking and analytics right at the beginning. This means at least setting up <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/analytics\/answer\/1008015?hl=en\">Google Analytics<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/docs\/fundamentals\/seo-starter-guide\">Google Search Console<\/a>. If you are thinking about paid ads you might need a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/business\/help\/952192354843755?id=1205376682832142\">Facebook pixel<\/a> or a Google Ads <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/analytics\/answer\/1008080?hl=en\">G-tag<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Even though there is almost no traffic going to your site at the moment, analytics is not something you should leave until later. The reason is the more data you have about your site, the more insights you will potentially have.<\/p>\n<p>Good data will tell you if the things you\u2019re doing are making an impact.<\/p>\n<p>Once set up you can use your Google Search Console for many things, such as spotting technical errors, monitoring your rankings, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/marketing\/seo\/sitemaps\/\">submitting your sitemaps<\/a>, and way more. You can even use Search Console to improve your ranking strategy.<\/p>\n<h3>10. Use Haro for Link Building<\/h3>\n<p>One of the most difficult aspects of SEO is link building. The reason is it requires creating content that people want to link to and then building relationships with site owners that are likely to link to that content.<\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019re just starting out, getting your first links can be really tough. No one wants to link out to a brand new site. This can be easily solved by signing up for a HARO account (Help a Reporter Out). HARO is a site that connects journalists with sources.<\/p>\n<p>After trying HARO I\u2019ve found it is a fairly easy way to generate legitimate high-quality links from established websites.<\/p>\n<p>The HARO concept is\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Reporters have to meet content deadlines. They often find themselves writing about topics that they are not experts in. To deal with this they go to HARO to look for those subject experts.<\/p>\n<p>This means if you sign up you can establish yourself as a source. When you submit an answer to a journalist\u2019s question, if they accept your answer, they will generally link back to your site.<\/p>\n<p>To get started you\u2019ll need to go to <a href=\"https:\/\/helpareporter.com\/\">https:\/\/www.helpareporter.com\/<\/a> and click the I\u2019m a Source button. You can then sign up for an account that will allow you to respond to the reporter\u2019s requests.<\/p>\n<p>Once you do this, you\u2019ll receive a list of emails every day including lists of journalist\u2019s requests for sources for articles they are writing.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/rank-ranger\/blog_6\/new-site-haro-emails.png\" alt=\"List of HARO emails\" width=\"1642\" height=\"387\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Simply sort through the emails daily to find requests that you can legitimately answer.<\/p>\n<p>When you find one, there will be a brief including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">A short summary of the journalist\u2019s requirements<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">An email address<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">A deadline<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/rank-ranger\/blog_6\/new-site-haro-brief.png\" alt=\"A journalist's request from a HARO email\" width=\"615\" height=\"676\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When answering a HARO request, make sure that you follow the brief exactly and answer long before the deadline. Also, don\u2019t write a long essay. The reporter is generally looking for information often in the form of a quote. Since they are generally on a tight deadline, you should make the information easy to find.<\/p>\n<p>The best way to do this is to write a few bullet points. Once you&#8217;ve done that, include a bio that qualifies that you are an expert and don&#8217;t forget to include where you want them to link to.<\/p>\n<h3>11. Create a Sitemap<\/h3>\n<p>Making sure your site is easily indexable in Google is a crucial first step in gaining organic traffic. Even if you have followed the site structure section of this post, all of your pages should be crawlable, nonetheless, <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/docs\/crawling-indexing\/sitemaps\/build-sitemap\">creating a site map<\/a> will ensure that Google can find and crawl all of your pages.<\/p>\n<p>Simply put, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/marketing\/seo\/sitemaps\/\">sitemap<\/a> is a list of different URLs on your site that search engines can crawl in order to find your pages.<\/p>\n<h4>Submit Your Sitemap to Google<\/h4>\n<p>This is really easy to do if you have already set up Google Search Console (see above).<\/p>\n<p>In Search Console, go to the Sitemaps tab and simply enter your sitemap URL into the field, and hit the Submit button.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/rank-ranger\/blog_6\/new-site-submit-site-map.png\" alt=\"Sitemap tab in Google Search Console\" width=\"1740\" height=\"730\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s as easy as that.<\/p>\n<p>Now if you want to see small traffic wins as soon as possible, you should also submit your sitemap to Bing.<\/p>\n<h4>Index Your Site In Bing Webmaster Tools<\/h4>\n<p>After going after low-competition keywords, indexing your site in Bing is one of the easiest ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/marketing\/seo\/increase-organic-traffic\/\">increase organic traffic<\/a>. Since Bing\u2019s algorithm works differently from Google, and because Bing is much less competitive than Google, you might find that content that never got any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/\">website traffic<\/a> from Google is suddenly getting Bing traffic.<\/p>\n<p>This is incredibly easy to do. All you have to do is set up a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/webmasters\/help\/getting-started-checklist-66a806de\">Bing Webmaster Tools account<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Once you have that set up, simply click the Sitemaps tab and then click the Submit Sitemaps button.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/rank-ranger\/blog_6\/new-websites_bing-sitemaps-tab.jpg\" alt=\"Sitemaps tab in Bing Webmaster Tools\" width=\"1747\" height=\"465\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When you do that, Bing Webmaster Tools will present a field where you can enter your sitemap URL.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/rank-ranger\/blog_6\/new-websites_bing-submit-sitemap.jpg\" alt=\"Submitting a URL in Bing Webmaster Tools\" width=\"1739\" height=\"545\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>12. Focus on Page Speed<\/h3>\n<p>Make sure your pages load fast.<\/p>\n<p>Especially with Google focusing on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/marketing\/seo\/core-web-vitals\/\">Core Web Vitals<\/a>. The reason is, that page speed is directly related to user experience and Google is focusing more and more on user experience.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bankbound.com\/blog\/conversion-rate-optimization-for-banks\/\">Trinity<\/a>, 37% of visitors bounce when your site takes five seconds to load and a one-second delay results in a 7% drop in conversions.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, there are many great tools available to help you with your page speed, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/pagespeed.web.dev\/\">Google PageSpeed Insights<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/gtmetrix.com\/\">GT Metrix<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/tools.pingdom.com\/\">Pingdom Tools<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These tools are pretty easy to use.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, if you go to the Google Pagespeeds Insights tool you will see a field where you can enter the URL you want to test.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/rank-ranger\/blog_6\/new-websites-google-pagespeed.jpg\" alt=\"Submitting a URL in the Google PageSpeed Insights\" width=\"1192\" height=\"580\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve entered the URL, press the Analyze button and wait a few seconds. Once the tool is done, it will give you an overall score out of a hundred.<\/p>\n<p>It will also let you know if the page passes a Core Web Vitals assessment.<\/p>\n<p>Below that, it will break down your page speed into different metrics so that you can easily see what is slowing it down.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve seen these metrics, scroll down to the Opportunities section.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/rank-ranger\/blog_6\/new-websites-google-pagespeed-opportunities.jpg\" alt=\"Opportunities tab in the Google PageSpeed Insights\" width=\"841\" height=\"962\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once there, you will see a list of elements that could be improved on. If you click on the downward-facing arrows, you\u2019ll see a list of elements that need work. Simply follow the recommendations.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve worked through the recommendations, retest your URL. You should hopefully see an improvement.<\/p>\n<h3>13. Optimize for Mobile Devices<\/h3>\n<p>Due to the explosion of mobile usage, it\u2019s now crucial to have a mobile-optimized site.<\/p>\n<p>Simply put, when creating any site think \u201dmobile-first\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, you must have a responsive design.
