In other words, Google is in no danger of being eclipsed by the OpenAI tech demo site that turned into a cultural phenomenon.<\/p>\n<p>We reported last month that ChatGPT\u2019s skyrocketing traffic growth was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/insights\/ai-news\/chatgpt-bard\/\">beginning to level out<\/a>, but this is the first month it\u2019s actually declined.<\/p>\n<h2>Key takeaways<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Worldwide desktop and mobile <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/chat.openai.com\/\">web traffic to the ChatGPT website<\/a>, chat.openai.com, dropped 9.7% from May to June, according to preliminary estimates. In the U.S., the month-over-month decline was 10.3%.<\/li>\n<li>Worldwide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/research\/market-research\/unique-visitors\/\">unique visitors<\/a> to ChatGPT\u2019s website dropped 5.7%. The amount of time visitors spent on the website was also down 8.5%.<\/li>\n<li>ChatGPT still attracts<a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/bing.com\/\"> more worldwide visitors than bing.com<\/a>, Microsoft\u2019s search engine, or Character.AI, the second most popular stand-alone AI chatbot site. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/character.ai\/\">Worldwide visits to Character.AI<\/a> dropped 32% month-over-month, although traffic is still up tremendously from where it was in June 2022, when the company founded by ex-Google engineers was just getting started. <strong>Update:<\/strong> in subsequent research, we found that app growth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/insights\/ai-news\/character-ai-mobile\/\">more than made up<\/a> for Character AI&#8217;s loss of web traffic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>ChatGPT stops defying gravity<\/h2>\n<p>In June, traffic and engagement for ChatGPT finally began to retreat after months of dizzying growth.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-149545 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/chatgpt_traffic_drops_1-512x317.png\" alt=\"chart: chatgpt and comparisons worldwide\" width=\"512\" height=\"317\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/chatgpt_traffic_drops_1-512x317.png 512w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/chatgpt_traffic_drops_1-300x186.png 300w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/chatgpt_traffic_drops_1-1024x633.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/chatgpt_traffic_drops_1-768x475.png 768w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/chatgpt_traffic_drops_1.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>ChatGPT\u2019s growth within the US was never quite as extreme as it looked on a worldwide basis, but here again, traffic began to shrink in June.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-149546 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/chatgpt_traffic_drops_2-512x317.png\" alt=\"chatgpt and comparisons US\" width=\"1200\" height=\"742\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/chatgpt_traffic_drops_2-512x317.png 512w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/chatgpt_traffic_drops_2-300x186.png 300w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/chatgpt_traffic_drops_2-1024x633.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/chatgpt_traffic_drops_2-768x475.png 768w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/chatgpt_traffic_drops_2.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>ChatGPT and Character.AI<\/h2>\n<p>Another AI chatbot site that had seen a rapid rise in the past few months was Character.AI, a playful site that has chatbots take on the personalities of celebrities, historical figures, and fictional characters. Initially launched as a technology demo, the ChatGPT website primarily serves as a loss leader generating sales leads for OpenAI, which makes its technology available for other companies to embed in their applications.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, OpenAI CEO has described the cost of operating the mostly free service as \u201ceye-watering\u201d \u2013 external estimates have pegged it at about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techspot.com\/news\/98422-chatgpt-costs-eye-watering-700000day-operate-claims-new.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$700,000 per day<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft is a major backer and has embedded OpenAI\u2019s GPT-4 algorithm into the Bing chat service offered as part of the search engine. Unlike Bing, OpenAI isn\u2019t necessarily set up to run a mass-market, ad-supported website. The main direct revenue ChatGPT earns is from subscriptions sold to those who want access to the latest and greatest version. Subscribers get GPT-4, for example, while free users get an older version. The sustainability of that as a business model is questionable, given that people can get GPT-4 for free as part of Bing.<\/p>\n<p>More significantly, OpenAI provides API access to more customizable versions of its software to other technology companies and corporate enterprises. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/platform.openai.com\/\">Traffic to the platform.openai.com<\/a> developer\u2019s website was up 3.1% from May to June.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the drop in interest not only for ChatGPT but one of its key competitors is a sign that the novelty has worn off for AI chat.
