All of the estimates in this report are for the US market.<\/li>\n<li>Engagement with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/app\/google-play\/com.ubercab.eats\/statistics\/\">Uber Eats delivery app<\/a>, which became very important for helping Uber sustain its revenues during the pandemic, dropped 23.5% as measured by monthly active users, while the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/app\/google-play\/com.ubercab\/statistics\/\">Uber ride share app<\/a> was up 2.5%. The user count for Postmates, which is owned by Uber, dropped 27.4%.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/app\/google-play\/com.dd.doordash\/statistics\/\">Monthly active users of Doordash<\/a> were down 19%, year-over-year. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/app\/google-play\/com.grubhub.android\/statistics\/\">Grubhub DAU<\/a> was down the most, 33.9%, and Seamless was down 17%. Both Grubhub and Seamless are owned by Just Eat Takeaway of the Netherlands.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/app\/google-play\/com.instacart.client\/statistics\/\">Instacart usage<\/a> dropped by a comparatively minor 6%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These estimates take advantage of an improved Similarweb data model for mobile apps, and iOS in particular, which will be introduced initially in the US.<\/p>\n<h2>Ride Share app usage continues to climb<\/h2>\n<p>While ride-share app usage has its ups and downs, it has generally seen increased usage since the pandemic. While some people have held onto new habits formed during the pandemic, the audience for food and grocery delivery has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/business\/consumer\/uber-eats-doordash-decline-in-person-dining-rcna25249\">retreated<\/a> from its past heights. Retention for the other apps shown in the chart was more consistent over the past several months.<\/p>\n<h2>Uber is well-positioned and Lyft gaining<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/app\/\">App engagement<\/a> is a leading indicator of consumer engagement with these apps, but consumer willingness to book a ride or order a delivery also matters, as does the cost structure of these companies.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the decline in Uber Eats business, analysts tend to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/ubers-stock-deemed-hard-to-ignore-with-possible-s-p-500-inclusion-ahead-d76575b2\">bullish<\/a> on Uber\u2019s business, on balance.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Lyft has laid off employees and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/us\/lyft-lay-off-over-thousand-workers-2023-04-27\/\">used the savings<\/a> to cut prices, a strategy that appears to have succeeded in driving user engagement. Pure play delivery app companies like DoorDash appear to have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com\/investing\/2023\/05\/27\/will-doordash-ever-make-money\/\">harder road ahead<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Public companies mentioned in this report include Uber Technologies (NYSE: UBER), Lyft (NASDAQ: LYFT), DoorDash (NYSE: DASH), and Just Eat Takeaway.com N.V.
