This is particularly true within the fast-changing landscape of digital sales &#8211; where consumer acquisition strategies can become irrelevant within months of execution &#8211; and brands that don\u2019t pivot quickly will be left behind.<\/p>\n<p>We are going to focus on industry online traffic leaders such as Nike and Adidas to explore the D2C performance of powerhouse <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/ecommerce\/retail-insights\/fastest-growing-activewear-brands\/\">athletic brands<\/a>. We will examine their established yet shifting presence in the space, strategies these brands have used to garner visits to their websites over the past year, and how their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/\">website traffic<\/a> domination has shifted some of the companies into an altogether different digital race.<\/p>\n<h2>D2C Sports Apparel Industry Online Traffic<\/h2>\n<p>Overall online site visits to the industry set have declined over the past three years, with nike.com taking the majority of the hit.<\/p>\n<p>Since June 2016 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/nike.com\/\">traffic to nike.com<\/a> has steadily decreased, going from nearly 30 Million visits to just under 12 Million visits in June 2018.<\/p>\n    <div class=\"js-infographic-script\" data-id=\"infogram_0_eecb37d7-d11e-4115-8ffe-c3632cef0c07\" data-title=\"Blog_SportsApparelTotalTraffic_line_0819\" data-src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed.js?TUe\"><\/div>\n\n<p>In a YOY comparison, nike.com experienced a 19% traffic decline, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/underarmour.com\/\">underarmour.com<\/a> had the second-largest decrease in traffic at 10%.<\/p>\n<p>During this same period, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/puma.com\/\">puma.com<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/reebok.com\/\">reebok.com<\/a> &#8211; both of whom share the smallest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/research\/market-research\/market-share-guide\/\">market share<\/a> in the space &#8211; experienced the largest increase in yearly traffic at 8% and 18% respectively.<\/p>\n    <div class=\"js-infographic-script\" data-id=\"infogram_0_3c5fe775-9af3-4665-9c10-e04a20f4f9f8\" data-title=\"Blog_SportsApparelYOYChange_barchart_819\" data-src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed.js?i0u\"><\/div>\n\n<h2>Marketing Channels Driving Growth<\/h2>\n<p>The majority of traffic driving the athletic brand set comes from direct channels and organic search.<\/p>\n    <div class=\"js-infographic-script\" data-id=\"infogram_0_a590ae7a-d616-4efd-adfc-46e5966370af\" data-title=\"Copy: blog_TargetConvYOY_grouped_819\" data-src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed.js?RbK\"><\/div>\n\n<p>Direct visits have grown steadily for the set since 2016 with nike.com and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/adidas.com\/\">adidas.com<\/a> seeing particular growth in this area, indicating an ever-growing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/research\/market-research\/brand-strength\/\">brand strength<\/a>. However, despite organic search being the second major driver of traffic for the brand set, it has steadily declined during the same period of time.<\/p>\n    <div class=\"js-infographic-script\" data-id=\"infogram_0_276db455-f9ef-444a-b876-0a5c0ce26118\" data-title=\"Blog_SportsApparelTraffChannsYOYChange_barchart_819\" data-src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed.js?GE0\"><\/div>\n\n<p>Nike.com differentiates its traffic flow from the athletic brand set in its domination of referrals and social media. Since 2016, nike.com has had over 40 million referral visits, nearly doubling the combined total traffic visits from the athletic brand set. Nike.com has also dominated social media channels during the same time period, having 65% more traffic than its nearest competitor, adidas.com.<\/p>\n<h2>Additional Strategic Tactics<\/h2>\n<p>Despite the decline in overall traffic to this space, nike.com, and Adidas.com are still the clear market leaders.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most prevalent tactics Adidas has taken to gain traffic to its site involves product releases and sales. Adidas.com was able to overtake nike.com in the number of daily site visits on three occasions in 2018 through product releases and sales.
