So Did Deactivations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>On the same day that X was attracting the most US visitors, it had the most account deactivations since Elon Musk took charge<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Wednesday Nov. 6, as Americans were absorbing the news of Donald Trump\u2019s election as president, X attracted 46.5 million visits from within the US to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">x.com<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to Similarweb estimates \u2013 more than any day within the past year and about 38% higher than an average day in recent months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the same day, more than 115,000 US web visitors deactivated their accounts \u2013 more than on any previous day of Elon Musk\u2019s tenure, during which many users who disagreed with his politics or his style have threatened to leave the service. That finding is based on tracking visits to the confirmation page on x.com (and previously twitter.com) that users see after confirming they want to deactivate their accounts. The previous peak was about 65,000 on December 15, 2023, shortly after Elon Musk restored the account of conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, attributing the decision to an informal poll he had conducted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We don\u2019t have similar tracking for users who used the X mobile app to deactivate their accounts.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Key takeaways<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/x.com\/\">X\u2019s US web traffic<\/a> had already set a record for the year on election day with 42.3 million visits, then climbed another 10% the following day to 46.5 million.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The increase in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/app\/google\/com.twitter.android\/\">daily active users for the X mobile apps<\/a> was not as dramatic \u2013 elevated over previous days but no higher than it was during the Republican National Convention.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/x.com\">Web traffic<\/a> and daily active users for Bluesky increased dramatically in the week before the election, and then again after election day. For several days, Bluesky\u2019s website (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bsky.app<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) had more traffic than Threads (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">threads.net<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), which had not previously been the case. Threads is far ahead of Bluesky in mobile app usage, however.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Truth Social web and app engagement was up on Tuesday and Wednesday, but not as high as some days during the Republican National Convention.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Worldwide, Nov. 6 was the year&#8217;s second highest day of web traffic to x.com &#8212; 173.3 million visits, compared with 175.5 million on July 14, the day after the assassination attempt on Trump.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Updates, as of Nov 15:<\/strong> In the US, Bluesky&#8217;s daily active users for iOS and Android increased 73% in the week after the election. To be clear, Bluesky is still a relatively small player &#8212; on Bluesky&#8217;s best day, that DAU count was about 1\/3 of the audience of Threads and about 1\/20 of X. Meanwhile, from election day through Tuesday the 12th, we estimate there were about 1.8 million X account deactivations worldwide, including about 482K in the US.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Twitter.com and X.com<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is the daily traffic pattern for the X service, which transitioned from twitter.com to x.com as its main domain in May, including the Nov. 6 peak.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-196973\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/twitter-x-daily.png\" alt=\"Twitter and X daily web traffic\" width=\"1200\" height=\"742\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/twitter-x-daily.png 1200w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/twitter-x-daily-300x186.png 300w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/twitter-x-daily-1024x633.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/twitter-x-daily-768x475.png 768w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/twitter-x-daily-512x317.png 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>X deactivations and broader trends<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time that some Americans were turning to X to either celebrate or complain about Trump\u2019s victory, a fraction of them were preparing to swear off the service for good. Here is the pattern we see with confirmed account deactivations on X.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-197053\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Confirmed-deactivations-X.com-US.png\" alt=\"chart: confirmed account deactivations US\" width=\"600\" height=\"371\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Confirmed-deactivations-X.com-US.png 600w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Confirmed-deactivations-X.com-US-300x186.png 300w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Confirmed-deactivations-X.com-US-512x317.png 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While the effect was most pronounced in the US, on Nov. 6 was also a peak day for account deactivations worldwide, more than 281,600, according to Similarweb estimates. Back in November 2022, we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/insights\/social-media-news\/twitter-quitters\/\">reported<\/a> that more than 200,000 people quit Twitter (as it was still called at the time) over the course of a weekend, as Musk took ownership of the platform. There have been since been some other other days with more than 200,000 deactivations following various controversies.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some users swearing off the X service will presumably stop using it, or use it less, without necessarily deactivating their accounts. Whether there will be a measurable decrease in the audience for X as the result of politics remains to be seen. By the weekend, X usage had tapered off to a more typical level over the past year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, X\u2019s recent daily peak in US traffic doesn\u2019t make up for the erosion in audience the service has seen over the past couple of years since Musk took ownership of the service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-196975 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/twitter-x-us.png\" alt=\"X.com vs Twitter.com traffic comparison\" width=\"1200\" height=\"742\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/twitter-x-us.png 1200w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/twitter-x-us-300x186.png 300w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/twitter-x-us-1024x633.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/twitter-x-us-768x475.png 768w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/twitter-x-us-512x317.png 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a global scale, X has done better but still not equaled the COVID-fueled traffic highs of early 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-196976\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/twitter-x-worldwide.png\" alt=\"chart: twitter.com and x.com worldwide\" width=\"1200\" height=\"742\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/twitter-x-worldwide.png 1200w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/twitter-x-worldwide-300x186.png 300w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/twitter-x-worldwide-1024x633.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/twitter-x-worldwide-768x475.png 768w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/twitter-x-worldwide-512x317.png 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>The Bluesky surge<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bluesky has been in the news recently, attracting rising interest particularly in Brazil (boosted by a period during access to X was blocked by the government) and in the UK. In the US, some journalists, politicians, and news junkies have also been talking up Bluesky as a better X alternative than Threads, the app Meta Platforms launched as a spin-off of Instagram.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the US, Bluesky got more web visits than Threads in the immediate aftermath of the election.
