But it is a weighted average, and the weighting matters enormously depending on who your audience is.

Rand’s methodology combined mobile and desktop by giving mobile a two-thirds weight and desktop one-third, reflecting real-world Google usage. That weighting is reasonable for a general consumer study. It is not representative of how enterprise buyers behave.
The two surfaces tell completely different stories.

On mobile, 45.2% of searches result in an external click, and only 11.5% end in a pure session abandonment. Mobile users keep moving. On desktop, 48% of searches end with no activity at all, and only 20.4% produce any external click to a non-Google site. The combined figure lands at 68% rather than higher, specifically because mobile carries most of the weight, and mobile is the more click-friendly surface.

Now think about your buyers.

B2B purchase decisions do not happen on phones. Vendor research, software comparisons, security reviews, RFP preparation, procurement sign-off: that is desktop behavior. Enterprise buyers evaluating a six-figure contract are not doing it between Instagram scrolls. Which means the 68% headline is flattering your situation. The desktop data alone puts your real zero-click exposure closer to 80%.

For B2B and SaaS marketers, zero-click is not a publisher problem you can observe from a distance. It treats SERP appearances, AI Overview citations, and featured snippet placements as brand placements in their own right, measuring success through visibility signals, citation frequency, and downstream branded search demand rather than session counts. It is not a social media strategy or a featured-snippet tactic. It is a full reframe of what winning in search looks like.

How is zero-click marketing different from zero-click SEO?

Zero-click SEO is a tactic: optimizing for featured snippets, AI Overviews, and other SERP features to appear prominently when users do not click. Zero-click marketing is the strategy that tells you which of those tactics to prioritize, why, and how to measure whether they are creating business value.

Zero-click SEO answers the question “how do I show up?” Zero-click marketing answers the harder question: “how do I know it is working when my traffic dashboard shows nothing?”

Does zero-click affect all queries equally, or should I still invest in traditional SEO for some keywords?

Intent type is the most important segmentation. Informational queries, the “what is,” “how does,” and definitional searches, now resolve at a zero-click rate well above 70% in most categories. Transactional queries, searches with explicit purchase intent like “buy,” “price,” or “best X for Y,” are largely unaffected: Google has deliberately limited AI Overview coverage on commercial queries because users still need to navigate to a specific store to complete a purchase.

The practical split is: optimize for citation and visibility on informational queries, and optimize hard for clicks on transactional ones. Your keyword portfolio almost certainly needs both tracks running simultaneously.

What KPIs should replace organic traffic in a zero-click world?

Traffic is still worth tracking. It is just no longer the scorecard. The replacement metrics measure where your brand appears in AI-generated answers and what happens downstream: AI citation frequency (how often your content is cited inside LLM responses), branded search volume lift (the demand signal that fires when users search your brand name after a zero-click encounter), zero-click impression share (your presence on non-clicking SERPs), brand mention rate across AI engines, and share of voice in AI answers versus competitors. Together, these capture whether you are winning influence, which is what traffic was always measuring as a proxy.

Does zero-click visibility drive actual revenue, or just vanity metrics?

It drives revenue through two documented mechanisms. First, the AI traffic that does convert is unusually high-quality: Similarweb’s 2025 Gen AI Landscape report measured ChatGPT referrals to US transactional sites at a 7% conversion rate versus Google’s 5%, with those visitors spending an average of 15 minutes on site versus 8. Second, zero-click brand exposure drives downstream branded search, which is highly converting and systematically misattributed to direct traffic by last-click models. Agentic search adds a third dimension: when AI agents complete purchases on behalf of users, the transaction bypasses your funnel entirely, meaning visibility determines inclusion at the point of sale, not just at the point of discovery.

What tools can I use to measure zero-click marketing performance?

Similarweb covers both layers of the stack. The Keyword Research tool provides zero-click rates at the individual keyword level, so you can classify your portfolio by citation play versus click opportunity. Similarweb AI Search Intelligence tracks brand citation frequency across AI engines, surfaces which prompt types trigger or suppress your brand, and benchmarks your share of voice against competitors.

For branded search lift, Similarweb’s Search Intelligence tracks branded query volume over time, giving you the downstream demand signal that last-click attribution misses.

Server access logs, filtered for known AI bot user agents like GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, and ClaudeBot, add a fourth data layer: visibility into which sections of your site AI crawlers are actively exploring as part of real user queries.

Here is a statistic that should recalibrate every assumption you have about what SEO is for in 2026: Zero-click searches, queries that end without a user clicking through to any website, now represent 68% of all Google searches, according to Similarweb’s latest data.
