{"id":24480,"date":"2016-05-25T11:46:37","date_gmt":"2016-05-25T11:46:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/corp\/blog\/?p=11936"},"modified":"2025-04-03T12:55:33","modified_gmt":"2025-04-03T12:55:33","slug":"traffic-backlinks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/marketing\/seo\/traffic-backlinks\/","title":{"rendered":"Analyzing Backlinks for 500,000 Websites"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We\u2019ve read the studies regarding the correlation between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/\">website traffic<\/a> and the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/marketing\/seo\/backlinks\/\">backlinks<\/a>, but are we right to take their assumptions for granted?<br \/>\nI wanted to analyze this correlation a little closer so that you could see once and for all whether this correlation was valid.<\/p>\n<h2>Methodology<\/h2>\n<p>To conduct this study I collected data on backlinks for the top 100,000 websites and split this into 5 different groups.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Overall traffic<\/li>\n<li>Organic search traffic<\/li>\n<li>PPC traffic<\/li>\n<li>Referrals traffic<\/li>\n<li>Social Media traffic<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After I had determined the 100,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/top-websites\/\">top websites<\/a> using traffic data for January 2016, I needed to dig a little deeper to glean the underlying correlations for backlinks in each group. Referrals held the strongest\u00a0correlation across all groups, though it was most striking in the \u2018global\u00a0traffic\u2019 group where there was a high correlation of 0.8.<br \/>\nAdditionally, I was also surprised to discover the impact of IP addresses in the\u00a0results. They accounted for\u00a0a significant amount of traffic and you can see this reflected in their number 2 position across all groups.<br \/>\nEDU and GOV websites also proved to be dark horses when providing website traffic due to their positive correlation in all groups. For PPC, there\u2019s clear evidence of a high correlation between Class C Subnets and the results.<br \/>\nThe overall impression I\u2019m left with is that backlinks <i>still <\/i>have a very high correlation to the amount of website traffic. However, it would be detrimental to your SEO efforts to assume this is the only avenue for link-building.
