So naturally, we\u2019re excited to announce that we\u2019ve released a huge improvement to how we calculate keyword volume \u2013 the number of times a keyword is searched on Google.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, we were getting this data directly from the Google Ads API, but we were running into three major issues:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Grouping:<\/b> Google groups similar keywords (including misspellings) and assigns all keywords within one group the same volume. So \u201csimilarweb\u201d and \u201cssimilarweb\u201d have the exact same volume according to Google\u2019s API.<\/li>\n<li><b>Coverage: <\/b>Google\u2019s volume is heavily based on Google Ads, so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/marketing\/seo\/long-tail-keywords\/\">long-tail keywords<\/a> that don\u2019t have ads placed against them will tend to not have volume metrics provided. Also, certain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/marketing\/seo\/types-of-keywords\/\">keyword types<\/a> are banned from having ads on them.<\/li>\n<li><b>Freshness: <\/b>Google Ads API has a 2-3 week delay.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>The new hybrid calculation<\/h2>\n<p>So, we decided to supplement what Google gives us with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/corp\/ourdata\/\">our own behavioral and publicly captured data.<\/a> We call this a \u201chybrid\u201d calculation, as it is now based on <i>several <\/i>distinct data sources, leading to greater confidence in the result. Check out some of the results and how they address the three main problems with Google\u2019s volume metric:<\/p>\n<h2>No more keyword grouping<\/h2>\n<p>In this \u2018before\u2019 example, Google creates two groups of similar keywords and assigns them all the same volume.
