As big data fans, we just had to see who the internet is cheering for and which websites have their eye on the ball.<\/p>\n<p>Using Similarweb\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/corp\/web\/\">Web Intelligence<\/a>, we took a look at key digital insights from the last three months to determine the digital winners for the NBA Playoffs and UEFA Euro 2020. Read on to discover what\u2019s trending in the digital sports world, from trending keyword searches and audience behavior.<\/p>\n<h2>The NBA isn\u2019t in a bubble anymore<\/h2>\n<p>Despite finishing the 2020 season with playoffs in an actual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportingnews.com\/us\/nba\/news\/nba-bubble-rules-teams-schedule-orlando\/zhap66a9hcwq1khmcex3ggabo\">quarantine bubble<\/a> in Orlando, Florida, the NBA is back this year in full swing (and with less restrictions). Since the start of the 2021 Playoffs on May 22, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/nba.com\/\">traffic to <b>nba.com<\/b><\/a> has jumped 61% to 73.1 million total visits.<\/p>\n<p>From the beginning of March, traffic has been peaking on the weekends. That makes sense because this is the time when the most popular games are scheduled and when viewers are most likely to check nba.com for highlights, scores, and in-depth information about the games.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-76861 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/sports-screenshots-1024x597.png\" alt=\"screenshot of nba traffic over time\" width=\"1024\" height=\"597\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/sports-screenshots-1024x597.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/sports-screenshots-300x175.png 300w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/sports-screenshots-768x448.png 768w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/sports-screenshots.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While the United States owns a majority of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/marketing\/marketing-strategy\/traffic-share\/\">traffic share<\/a> sent to nba.com (48.4%), we\u2019re seeing international interest. In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/\">web traffic<\/a> trends from outside the U.S. follow similar patterns to what we see there. Almost all of the countries we analyzed show an increase in traffic leading up to the playoffs, as well as strong <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/research\/business-benchmarking\/benchmarking-engagement-metrics\/\">user engagement metrics<\/a>.<\/p>\n    <div class=\"js-infographic-script\" data-id=\"infogram_0_c7a41fef-e4f4-4bb7-9724-6db802009410\" data-title=\"nba - traffic share by country\" data-src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed.js?fL2\"><\/div>\n\n<p>If we dive deeper into nba.com\u2019s audience, we find that nearly 75% of visitors identify as male, most likely between 18-44 years of age.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-76863\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/gender-age-split-1024x597.png\" alt=\"gender age split for nba\" width=\"1024\" height=\"597\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/gender-age-split-1024x597.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/gender-age-split-300x175.png 300w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/gender-age-split-768x448.png 768w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/gender-age-split.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Sports news sites &#8211; who\u2019s winning?<\/h2>\n<p>Five main <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/top-websites\/sports\/\">sports news websites<\/a> are in competition for keyword-related search for the NBA playoffs. Although <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/espn.com\/\"><b>espn.com<\/b><\/a> has the highest total visits, when looking year-over-year (YoY), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/sports.yahoo.com\/\"><b>sports.yahoo.com<\/b><\/a> is actually growing the fastest.<\/p>\n    <div class=\"js-infographic-script\" data-id=\"infogram_0_5190d9ee-86f6-4780-bc1b-164e3edc9b7e\" data-title=\"nba total visits news sites\" data-src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed.js?oOf\"><\/div>\n\n<p>When taking a more granular view of May 2021, espn.com comes out the clear winner, outperforming its competitors across all user engagement metrics. This suggests that ESPN is successfully capitalizing on trending keywords and user interest to drive traffic to its website.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-78343\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/espn-vs-competitors-1-1024x597.png\" alt=\"espn vs competitors\" width=\"1024\" height=\"597\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/espn-vs-competitors-1-1024x597.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/espn-vs-competitors-1-300x175.png 300w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/espn-vs-competitors-1-768x448.png 768w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/espn-vs-competitors-1.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>What are people searching for (and who\u2019s winning traffic)?<\/h2>\n<p>The keyword <i>nba playoffs<\/i> had 1.1 million total search visits in May 2021, a 900% increase from April 2021 (109,200).\u00a0Question queries related to the keyword, plus the keyword traffic leader, include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>When do nba playoffs start<\/i> (nba.com)<\/li>\n<li><i>How to watch nba playoffs<\/i> (youtube.com)<\/li>\n<li><i>How many teams make the nba playoffs<\/i> (reuters.com)<\/li>\n<li><i>How do nba playoffs work<\/i> (basketballworld.com)<\/li>\n<li><i>When are the nba playoffs 2021<\/i> (nba.com)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The top organic competitors for these keywords are nba.com, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/youtube.com\/\">youtube.com<\/a>, espn.com, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/cbsports.com\/\">cbsports.com<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/wikipedia.com\/\">wikipedia.com<\/a>, all of which experienced massive growth in May 2021. In the last three months, social visits accounted for 3.5% of the website\u2019s total desktop traffic, about 3 million visits. For comparison, nfl.com received 1 million social visits in the same time period. Together, YouTube and Reddit are responsible for over 50% of the total referrals to nba.com.<\/p>\n    <div class=\"js-infographic-script\" data-id=\"infogram_0_67ff7b50-0b5c-49b0-bedf-292ecf2f6fc9\" data-title=\"social traffic share NBA\" data-src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed.js?pEa\"><\/div>\n\n<h2>UEFA Euro 2020 traffic jumps<\/h2>\n<p>Now let\u2019s turn to soccer. After being postponed for one year, as the first match of the UEFA Championship approached, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/uefa.com\/\">traffic to <b>uefa.com<\/b><\/a> steadily increased as more and more fans prepared for the competition, which kicked off last Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Total visits to uefa.com \u2013 European soccer\u2019s governing body \u2013 was up 34% in May 2021 MoM and YoY traffic rocketed a whopping 440%.\u00a0 After waiting a year for the championship due to COVID-19, soccer fans are eager to tune into the major sports event.<\/p>\n    <div class=\"js-infographic-script\" data-id=\"infogram_0_2cd86aea-0822-43e8-9dd7-de5545d631c9\" data-title=\"uefa traffic\" data-src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed.js?9nB\"><\/div>\n\n<p>Almost all countries worldwide experienced a significant traffic share increase to uefa.com in the last three months.
