However, with the rise of eCommerce, in-store furniture shopping has become pass\u00e9 \u2013 consumers are going digital instead.<\/p>\n<p>To help brands and retailers navigate this changing landscape, we\u2019ll analyze the digital performance of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/top-websites\/home-and-garden\/furniture\/\">top online furniture sites<\/a>, using our eCommerce solutions, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/corp\/web\/\">Web<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/corp\/retail\/\">Retail Intelligence<\/a>. Get comfy as the battle between <strong>Wayfair<\/strong> vs. <strong>Overstock<\/strong> vs. <strong>Ikea<\/strong> vs. <strong>Amazon<\/strong> plays out and learn from their best practices so you can also succeed online.<\/p>\n<h2>Competition heats up: Consumers go online for furniture shopping<\/h2>\n<p>Trends across furniture retailers\u2019 landscape and on amazon.com show a shift in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/corp\/retail\/consumer-demand\/\">consumer demand<\/a> for online shopping.<\/p>\n<h3>Web traffic: Overstock vs. Wayfair vs. Ikea<\/h3>\n<p>In the past two years (since September 2019), combined <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/wayfair.com\/\">web traffic to wayfair.com<\/a>, overstock.com, and ikea.com increased by 73%. Current and historical traffic to wayfair.com has exceeded that to overstock.com and ikea.com, which are in a much tighter race. Since January 2021, Overstock averaged 6M more monthly visits than Ikea. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/ikea.com\/\">traffic to Ikea<\/a> recently (August 2021) edged out Overstock.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-93258 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/undefined-9.png\" alt=\"Visits to Overstock, Wayfair, Ikea\" width=\"1202\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/undefined-9.png 1202w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/undefined-9-300x124.png 300w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/undefined-9-1024x422.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/undefined-9-768x316.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1202px) 100vw, 1202px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Traffic peaked for all retailers in May 2020, reflecting increased online furniture shopping at the height of COVID-19 and the desire to furnish larger spaces as the <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2020\/10\/20\/real-estate-coronavirus-pandemic-home-buying-zillow-redfin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">housing market boomed<\/a>. In August of this year and last, traffic to Ikea appears to catch up to Overstock, perhaps due to its low cost, contemporary furniture being favored to outfit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/corp\/reports\/back-to-school-furniture\/\">dorm rooms during back-to-school<\/a> season. Yet, Overstock gains a lead into the holiday season.<\/p>\n<h3>Amazon<\/h3>\n<p>Activity in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/top-websites\/e-commerce-and-shopping\/marketplace\/\">leading eCommerce marketplaces<\/a>, like Amazon, also reflects the growing online furniture industry. Product views for Amazon\u2019s furniture category increased by 103% from January 2020 &#8211; August 2021, exceeding the average growth of other categories (+55%) during the same time period, showing furniture\u2019s growth is stronger than in other sectors.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-93253 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Emilyf-SW-Blog-Pro-Screenshot-Rebrand-54.png\" alt=\"Product views: Amazon furniture\" width=\"1200\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Emilyf-SW-Blog-Pro-Screenshot-Rebrand-54.png 1200w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Emilyf-SW-Blog-Pro-Screenshot-Rebrand-54-300x175.png 300w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Emilyf-SW-Blog-Pro-Screenshot-Rebrand-54-1024x597.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Emilyf-SW-Blog-Pro-Screenshot-Rebrand-54-768x448.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Conversion rates<\/h3>\n<p>At 3.1%, Overstock has the highest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/ecommerce\/retail-insights\/ecommerce-conversion-optimization\/\">conversion rate<\/a> (CVR) among the three furniture retail sites, surpassing Ikea\u2019s 1.7% and Wayfair\u2019s 2.9%. Its conversion rate also exceeds that of Amazon\u2019s Furniture category which was 2.6% in July.<\/p>\n<p>Ikea surpasses Overstock for the number of desktop visits, with 14.5M more desktop visits in the past three months. However, due to Overstock\u2019s higher CVR, it converted 11.8X more visits than Ikea (1.4M vs. 118K) in this time frame. Despite a lower CVR, Wayfair\u2019s number of converted visits still exceeds Overstock&#8217;s as it has much more overall traffic \u2013 123 million monthly visits vs. Overstock\u2019s 39.5 million.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-93249 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Screen-Shot-2021-09-16-at-11.05.54-AM.png\" alt=\"Overstock trails for traffic but has the highest CVR\" width=\"1030\" height=\"730\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Screen-Shot-2021-09-16-at-11.05.54-AM.png 1030w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Screen-Shot-2021-09-16-at-11.05.54-AM-300x213.png 300w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Screen-Shot-2021-09-16-at-11.05.54-AM-1024x726.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Screen-Shot-2021-09-16-at-11.05.54-AM-768x544.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1030px) 100vw, 1030px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The 16% decline in CVR for Amazon\u2019s furniture category exceeds the average decline (-3.5%) across other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/ecommerce\/amazon-insights\/top-amazon-categories\/\">Amazon categories<\/a> from January 2020 &#8211; July 2021. These metrics suggest that more and more consumers are cross-shopping other retailers before deciding to buy large ticket items, which may require more research before purchase than most Amazon items.<\/p>\n<p>Low <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/ecommerce\/amazon-insights\/customer-loyalty-tips\/\">customer loyalty<\/a> also contributes to these numbers. In August, just 38% of furniture shoppers were returning customers. Also, zero furniture revenue comes through Subscribe and Save, Amazon\u2019s subscription program which guarantees recurring purchases. This number often exceeds 20% for categories like Grocery &amp; Gourmet and Household, with essential, low-cost items.<\/p>\n<h2>Getting the right customers: Cross-shopping and audience loyalty<\/h2>\n<p>Shoppers on wayfair.com seem more loyal than those shopping on overstock.com or ikea.com. Only 33% of Wayfair shoppers visited these competitor sites. However, 47% of Ikea\u2019s visitors and 61% of Overstock visited Wayfair, indicating that Wayfair is more effectively retaining traffic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>Audience Overlap between Top Furniture Retailers\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">U.S., Desktop, May 2021 \u2013 Jul 2021<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-93265 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/chart-9.png\" alt=\"Wayfair vs. Overstock vs. Ikea vs. Amazon \" width=\"808\" height=\"498\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/chart-9.png 808w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/chart-9-300x185.png 300w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/chart-9-768x473.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 808px) 100vw, 808px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Wayfair also appears to be the largest threat to Amazon. Nearly 17% of Amazon furniture shoppers also visited Wayfair, whereas just under 12% of Wayfair shoppers visited Amazon.<\/p>\n<p>Again, Overstock shoppers exhibit the least loyalty among the four retail sites \u2013 13.4% of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/amazon.com\/\">shoppers visit amazon.com<\/a>. With just 6.4% of Amazon shoppers also visiting Overstock, it appears to be a lesser concern for the eCommerce giant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>Shopper Overlap with Amazon Furniture\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">U.S., Desktop and Mobile, May\u00a0 \u2013 July 2021<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-93242 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/chart-8.png\" alt=\"Shopper Overlap with Amazon Furniture\" width=\"782\" height=\"478\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/chart-8.png 782w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/chart-8-300x183.png 300w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/chart-8-768x469.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 782px) 100vw, 782px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Takeaway<\/h3>\n<p>Since Overstock has the highest share of traffic overlap among the measured furniture retailers (61%), it can work on opportunities to increase loyalty on the platform and better communicate its unique value proposition.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, Overstock can highlight the ability to pay in various formats (Overstock has long accepted Bitcoin and has been a leader in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/research\/market-research\/top-crypto-websites\/\">cryptocurrency space<\/a>), its more flexible return policy, and discounts offered to veterans, teachers, and students. It can also highlight its growing number of private label brands, which it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalcommerce360.com\/2018\/05\/16\/overstock-makes-a-private-label-push\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">initially pushed to compete with Wayfair<\/a>, and, of course, are only available on Overstock\u2019s website.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-93271 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Wayfair-vs.-Overstock-Comparison-1.png\" alt=\"Overstock vs. Wayfair comparison table\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Wayfair-vs.-Overstock-Comparison-1.png 960w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Wayfair-vs.-Overstock-Comparison-1-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Wayfair-vs.-Overstock-Comparison-1-768x432.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Overstock capitalizes on mobile traffic<\/h2>\n<p>Overstock\u2019s breakdown of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/platforms\/\">mobile vs. desktop traffic<\/a> most closely resembles device usage across the furniture industry. Overstock generates 64% of traffic through mobile devices whereas Wayfair generates 60% and Ikea generates just 48%.<\/p>\n<p>The proportion of mobile <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/overstock.com\/\">traffic to overstock.com<\/a> exceeds that which goes to the top 25 furniture websites (63%) but lags behind the top 100 in the furniture industry, according to Web Intelligence data. Mobile devices accounted for 69% of traffic to the top 100 furniture retail websites in recent months (May &#8211; Aug. 2021).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>Site Visits by Device Distribution<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">U.S., Desktop and Mobile Web, May 2021 \u2013 Jun 2021<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-93233 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/chart-6.png\" alt=\"Wayfair vs. Overstock: Site visit distribution\" width=\"728\" height=\"469\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/chart-6.png 728w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/chart-6-300x193.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 728px) 100vw, 728px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We suspect that a larger proportion of the top 25 sites started as brick-and-mortar stores vs. the top 100, contributing to the 6 percentage point (ppt) difference. For instance, <b>Ashley Furniture, Crate and Barrel<\/b>, and <b>Mattress Firm<\/b>, ranked among the top 10, started with onsite businesses like Ikea. Digging deeper into the list, more D2C brands like <b>Nectar<\/b>, <b>Casper<\/b> (leaders in mattress wars), and <strong>Joybird<\/strong> appear, which started purely as online businesses. Therefore, optimization across devices \u2013 their only \u201cstorefronts\u201d \u2013 was likely of higher priority than retailers with physical storefronts as their initial, core business.<\/p>\n<p>As mobile-savvy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/research\/audience-and-brand-building\/attract-millennial-audiences\/\">millennials<\/a> and Gen Zers up their buying power, we anticipate the furniture industry to continue to go more mobile. The competitive set needs to make sure that its sites are optimized for mobile. Wayfair and Ikea can even look at Overstock\u2019s mobile growth and emulate best practices.<\/p>\n<h3>App downloads: Overstock is catching up to Wayfair<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/top-apps\/google\/\">App download trends<\/a> suggest that Overstock is catching up to Wayfair. While Wayfair has an overall larger mobile audience, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/app\/google-play\/com.wayfair.wayfair\/statistics\/\">Wayfair app downloads<\/a> in July were at a year-to-date (YTD) low of 314.7K.\u00a0 At the same time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/app\/google-play\/com.sridevisports.ridevisports\/statistics\/\">Overstock\u2019s monthly app downloads<\/a> reached a peak at 193.8K.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, Wayfair\u2019s daily active users (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/research\/apps\/daily-active-users\/\">DAU<\/a>), at 207K in July, have been decreasing 9% month-over-month (MoM) since April, whereas Overstock has remained stable at around 37K.<\/p>\n    <div class=\"js-infographic-script\" data-id=\"infogram_0_5b41e797-c47e-45d8-9d5e-c5fe4477602b\" data-title=\"App Downloads: Wayfair, Overstock, etc.\" data-src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed.js?n0e\"><\/div>\n\n<h4>Takeaway<\/h4>\n<p>Overstock\u2019s increased downloads suggest it\u2019s successfully marketing and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/research\/audience-and-brand-building\/brand-awareness\/\">building brand awareness<\/a> of its app. To capitalize on this, to boost engagement and app usage, Overstock could send more push notifications about promotions and events.<\/p>\n<h2>Search trends to watch<\/h2>\n<p>Currently, Wayfair captures an average of 70% of mobile traffic from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/marketing\/seo\/top-keywords\/\">top search terms<\/a>. However, there are some areas in which other furniture retailers con focus to help gain traction, including:<\/p>\n<p><b>Work from home:<\/b> <i>Desk <\/i>is the most common search term, driving 447K visits to the competitive set. It also was the second-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/ecommerce\/amazon-insights\/top-amazon-products\/\">most searched term across Amazon<\/a> this summer (behind Crocs).<\/p>\n<p>With the continued prevalence of remote working and the recent back-to-school season, the prominence of not only <i>desk, <\/i>but related searches is likely to continue.<\/p>\n<p>Although Wayfair already dominates for the<i> desk<\/i> search term, retailers and brands may want to work on optimizing their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/ecommerce\/amazon-insights\/optimize-amazon-listings\/\">product listings<\/a> and investing in PPC for related, but relevant terms. For instance on amazon.com, <i>computer desk, <\/i>and <i>standing desk <\/i>rank among the top twenty most searched terms. Office furniture like <i>office chair<\/i> rank among the top five.<\/p>\n<p><b>Seasonal furniture:<\/b> Overstock received 44% of traffic from <i>patio furniture<\/i> and 50% of traffic for<i> outdoor furniture<\/i>, which is neck-and-neck with Wayfair, at 56% and 48% respectively, for these two similar terms popular in the summer months.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-93235 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/chart-7.png\" alt=\"Top Mobile Search Terms, Wayfair, Overstock, Ikea\" width=\"756\" height=\"449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/chart-7.png 756w, https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/chart-7-300x178.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 756px) 100vw, 756px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However, with summer ending and the weather beginning to get colder, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/marketing\/seo\/\">SEO<\/a> strategies and PPC spend should shift toward terms related to indoor products.
