{"id":9972,"date":"2016-02-03T19:38:27","date_gmt":"2016-02-03T16:38:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/corp\/blog\/?p=9972"},"modified":"2025-08-05T11:43:32","modified_gmt":"2025-08-05T11:43:32","slug":"new-countries-app-engagement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/updates\/product-updates\/new-countries-app-engagement\/","title":{"rendered":"New Countries in App Engagement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Similarweb is proud to announce that we have added 10 new countries to our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/research\/apps\/app-engagement-guide\/\">app engagement metrics<\/a>, further enhancing the scope of our online digital insights.<br \/>\nThese new countries are:\u00a0<b>Greece,\u00a0<\/b><b>Hungary,\u00a0<\/b><b>Indonesia,\u00a0<\/b><b>Israel, Japan, Philippines,\u00a0<\/b><b>Portugal, S<b>ingapore,<\/b>\u00a0<\/b><b>Ukraine<\/b><b>, and\u00a0<\/b><b>United Arab Emirates<\/b>.<br \/>\nIn\u00a0these countries, our data can show several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/research\/business-benchmarking\/benchmarking-engagement-metrics\/\">engagement\u00a0metrics<\/a> as well as other vital information such as &#8216;Audience Interests&#8217;- apps used more than average by users who also use the selected app, &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/research\/apps\/app-usage-patterns\/\">Usage Patterns<\/a>&#8216;- what time people use the selected app, and &#8216;Retention&#8217;- showing how loyal users are to a selected\u00a0app.<br \/>\nFor an overview of these countries, Similarweb data was used to compare two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/research\/apps\/worldwide-messaging-apps\/\">top messaging apps<\/a>:\u00a0<strong>WhatsApp<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Messenger<\/strong>. These two apps were compared based on &#8216;Current Installs&#8217;- the percent of Android devices that have the app installed on them. In this case, the data reflects each country for the month of December 2015.\u00a0Find out more about Similarweb&#8217;s app engagement metrics by contacting us <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/corp\/contact-us\/\">here<\/a>.<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9978\" title=\"Whatsapp Vs Messenger Installs worldwide\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/corp\/wp-content\/uploads\/blog\/2016\/02\/Picture4.png\" alt=\"Whatsapp Vs Messenger Installs worldwide\" width=\"880\" height=\"764\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\u00a0The country with the highest rate of installs for WhatsApp is Israel with 90% of Android&#8217;s. Close behind is the U.A.E. where 89% of Android devices have WhatsApp installed. Japan is the country with the least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/app\/google-play\/com.whatsapp\/statistics\/\">amount of WhatsApp installs<\/a>, at only 3% of Androids have the app. After Japan, Android users in the Philippines have the second fewest % of Whatsapp with only 10% having the app.Philippines, though, is the top app when it comes to % installs for Messenger, with the U.A.E. narrowly beating out Hungary and Portugal for second place. Ukraine is the country with the lowest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/app\/google-play\/com.facebook.orca\/statistics\/\">installs of Messenger<\/a>, at only 16%, though WhatsApp also has a low rate of installs in the country, with only 19% of Ukrainian Androids carrying the app.<\/div>\n<p>Having these new countries also allows us to see the top 10 apps based on\u00a0Similarweb\u2019s \u2018Usage Rank\u2019 rating. The Usage Rank rating is calculated based on a Similarweb algorithm that factors in \u2018Current Installs\u2019 and \u2018Active Users\u2019 in a\u00a0selected country. Discover below the top 10 apps in 4 of the new app countries:<strong> Indonesia, Japan, Philippines, and Singapore<\/strong>.<br \/>\nAccording to the Usage Rank rating, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/app\/google-play\/com.bbm\/statistics\/\">BBM<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>by Blackberry\u00a0is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/top-apps\/google\/indonesia\/\">top free Android app in Indonesia<\/a>. The app is heavily used in Indonesia and is installed on 88% of Android devices, averaging 23 sessions per user. Outside of BBM, most apps are\u00a0familiar top apps, and are pretty consistent with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/top-apps\/google\/\">top apps<\/a> in the U.S.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9981\" title=\"Top 10 free andoird apps in Indonesia\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/corp\/wp-content\/uploads\/blog\/2016\/02\/new-indoneisa-1.png\" alt=\"Top 10 free andoird apps in Indonesia\" width=\"692\" height=\"429\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The top app in Japan is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/app\/google-play\/jp.naver.line.android\/statistics\/\"><strong>LINE<\/strong>: Free Calls &amp; Messages<\/a>, a communication app that only ranked 41 in the U.S.<b>\u00a0<\/b>Japan also has two unique <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/top-apps\/google\/japan\/\">Japanese apps<\/a> in the top 10:\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/app\/google-play\/jp.co.nttdocomo.carriermail\/statistics\/\">sp\u30e2\u30fc\u30c9\u30e1\u30fc\u30eb<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/app\/google-play\/jp.co.yahoo.android.yjtop\/statistics\/\">Yahoo! JAPAN<\/a><\/strong>. As of February 1st, 2016, Yahoo! JAPAN had an average of 55.72% active app users, while sp\u30e2\u30fc\u30c9\u30e1\u30fc\u30eb had\u00a042.51% active app users.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9982\" title=\"Top 10 free android apps in Japan\" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/corp\/wp-content\/uploads\/blog\/2016\/02\/new-japajn-1.png\" alt=\"Top 10 free android apps in Japan\" width=\"602\" height=\"368\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the Philippines,<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/app\/google-play\/com.facebook.katana\/statistics\/\">Facebook<\/a> <\/strong>proved to be the<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>top app and is installed on over 90% of Android devices in the country. Facebook&#8217;s accompanying app\u00a0Messenger was second most popular with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/app\/google-play\/com.jb.gosms\/statistics\/\">GO SMS Pro<\/a> <\/strong>taking third place.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9983 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/corp\/wp-content\/uploads\/blog\/2016\/02\/new-philipeins-1.png\" alt=\"new philipeins\" width=\"603\" height=\"369\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In Singapore, 79% of Android phones\u00a0have WhatsApp installed, and the popular messaging app is tops in Similarweb&#8217;s Usage Rank in the country.
