About the exhibition From out-of-the-way fishing village to mythic artists’ haven: in the nineteenth century, Étretat on the Normandy coast became a source of inspiration for many painters and played a significant role in the rise of Impressionism. Claude Monet was among those fascinated by the sea and chalk cliffs there. In collaboration with the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, Frankfurt’s Städel Museum is presenting a major special exhibition spanning an arc from Étretat’s discovery by artists to its budding tourism to its world-famous rock formations in works by Courbet, Monet, and Matisse.
