XDGA Market Share Analysis for April 2026

This study explores ways of incorporating a history museum in the Vleeshuis. The historic building is located in the oldest section of the city, with its concentric street pattern and remains of the original city wall. Both the immediately surrounding area and the building itself can form part of the exhibition. As a public building, the museum can also exert an influence on the character of the neighbourhood – currently an introverted residential zone. A key issue, finally, is how to overcome the limited accessibility of the upper part of the building. The monolithic Vleeshuis (the butchers’guildhouse) comprised a public section – a market  hall with open doors at street level – and a private upper storey used for guild business. Our proposal envisaged turning the Gothic hall into a public space once again – an intermediary between the city and the museum. The covered square includes several kiosks for tourists and local people. Temporary exhibitions are housed in the basement, which looks out onto the Burggracht. The museum itself consists of the upper storeys and a new building on the opposite side of the street. This is linked to the upper part of the Vleeshuis by an angled lift, which would allow the topmost storeys to be opened up.This avoids harming the Gothic vault above the market hall and only requires a single opening in the building’s main façade. The entrance point is in the new building near the old city wall. The lift carries visitors over the street and into the attic storey of the Vleeshuis, where the exhibition begins. The circuit ends in the basement of the new building, with visitors returning via the museum shop to their starting point at street level. The new building is defined by two walls. The first is the existing one on the building line of the city wall – a patchwork of different materials from successive periods. The other is the new façade, made up of types of glass that vary – transparent, translucent, coloured or black – depending on
