Given the current interest in the relationship between social participation and health, this article focused on existing measures that (1) includes the four dimensions of social participation - breadth, intensity, duration, and engagement - identified by Bonhert et al. (2010) and that (2) can be used in large-scale surveys. In Study 1, a scoping review conducted on three databases (PsychTest, PsychInfo, Sociological abstracts) led to identify 99 articles that included a measure of formal social participation. No measure met all two requirements. It was therefore decided to construct a new instrument including an index based on 11 items that assess the four dimensions of the construct. Using clustering techniques, Study 2 identified social participation profiles based on 4247 participants. Five clusters of social participation emerged: (0) absence, (1) passive, (2) low active, (3) medium active, and (4) high active. Study 3 replicated these findings on a new sample (n = 4279), supporting the validity and reliability of the social participation index. Coded as an ordinal categorical variable, this index lend itself to statistical analyses commonly performed on large-scale survey data. This measure of formal social participation could meet the need for a standard tool in this field of investigation.
