En octubre de 1979 se grabó en Nueva York el álbum Nick Mason's Fictitious Sports, que significó el debut en solitario del batería del popular grupo Pink Floyd. Carla Bley fue coproductora, tocó el piano y compuso las ocho canciones que lo integraban. En el LP, que se publicó en 1981, aparecían, junto a Mason y otros músicos, varios habituales de la banda de Carla como Michael Matler (trompeta), Gary Valente (trombón), Steve Swallows (bajo), Howard Johnson (tuba) y Steve Gadd (batería), lo que llevó a algunos críticos a considerarlo un álbum de ella en todo menos en el nombre.
