Sack gardening betekent letterlijk tuinieren in zakken. Het is een techniek waarbij groente en fruit worden gekweekt in zakken. Dit is vooral handig in gebieden met beperkte ruimte, slechte grondomstandigheden of stedelijke omgevingen waar geen toegang is tot vruchtbare grond. Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre (KMWSC) werkt al vele jaren in de Brickfields. De Brickfields zijn de duizenden steenfabriekjes die de stevige klei van de rivieren in West Bengalen gebruiken voor het maken van bakstenen. De leefomstandigheden zijn er slecht. Al meer dan 10 jaar steunen we onderwijs, gezondheidszorg en voorlichting voor deze seizoenarbeiders. Zij komen van ver en wonen en werken als seizoenarbeider op de grond van de steenfabrieken. Hun voedingspatroon is eenzijdig en ze hebben bijna geen kennis over gezond eten. Het is door deze combinatie van factoren dat CR Nederland samen met KMWSC het Sack Gardening programma heeft ontwikkeld. Na een jaar voorbereiding startte in november 2022 het werven van de deelnemers. Iedereen kreeg een uitgebreide training over hoe ze deze mini moestuintjes konden verzorgen. In december werd de vruchtbare grond en compost in handige grote zakken gedaan en kon het zaaien beginnen.
