18.10.2025/Kiel. Vor 100 Jahren stach das Forschungsschiff Meteor in See, um den Atlantik systematisch zu erforschen – eine der bedeutendsten Expeditionen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Zum Jubiläum eröffnete das Deutsche Schifffahrtsmuseum (DSM)/Leibniz-Institut für Maritime Geschichte Ende Juni 2025 die Ausstellung „Land gewinnen – Die Deutsche Atlantische Expedition von 1925 bis 1927“. Das GEOMAR Helmholtz-Zentrum für Ozeanforschung Kiel unterstützt die Ausstellung mit originalen Fotonegativen, Exponaten und Interviews mit GEOMAR-Wissenschaftler:innen, um die Forschung aus heutiger Perspektive einzuordnen. Zusätzlich haben GEOMAR und DSM nun gemeinsam eine interaktive Storymap veröffentlicht: Heute vor 100 Jahren, am 18. Oktober 1925, entdeckten die Forscher auf der Strecke von Buenos Aires nach Kapstadt die sogenannte Meteor-Bank, eine Formation am Meeresboden. Anhand der Tagebucheinträge von Kapitän Fritz Spieß lässt sich die Expedition Station für Station nachverfolgen.
