The primary purpose of this book is to provide veterinary practitioners, veterinary students, and veterinary technologists with a concise review of the salient facts of the infectious and parasitic diseases of dogs and cats. Included are the diseases caused by bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa, helminths, and external parasites. An introductory section deals in some detail with the selection and submission of clinical specimens to the veterinary diagnostic laboratory and the interpretation of reports to the veterinarian from the diagnostic laboratory. Many texts on infectious diseases use a systems orientation in the presentation of material. This often results in the overlapping of discussions in that a number of infectious diseases affect more than one system. To get around this difficulty we have provided a checklist in which the names of the infectious diseases are listed according to the principal system affected. One can then select the disease or diseases one wishes to consult. The disease discussions are listed alphabetically. The material is organized and presented for quick reference and is therefore also useful to laboratory technicians, and veterinary students preparing for veterinary board examinations. The main emphasis is on diseases which occur in North America. Most of these diseases also occur elsewhere throughout the world, but the extent of their occurrence may vary from one region to another. A small number of diseases may only occur in particular geographic regions outside North America. These diseases are discussed but given less emphasis.
