A quick scan of many pet store shelves reveals treats with honey, molasses, fruit, or corn-based fillers. These ingredients might sound tasty, but ferrets are obligate carnivores. Their bodies aren’t designed to process sugar or carbs, and over time, these can lead to serious health problems such as insulinoma (a type of pancreatic cancer), obesity, and dental issues. What should you look for in a healthy treat? When choosing treats for your ferret, always look for: High protein content Single-ingredient or meat-based recipes No added sugars or grains No artificial preservatives or colors Freeze-dried and air-dried treats are excellent options because they retain natural nutrients without unnecessary additives.
