While softer than oak or maple (Janka 540), Poplar is a cost-effective choice for painted staircases where a perfect, uniform surface matters most. Available in standard widths of 36”, 42”, 48”, 54”, 60”, and 72”—or specify a custom size—with an 11-1/4” depth that meets code. Choose unfinished to apply your own stain or clear coat, or select a pre-finished option for a ready-to-install tread.
