Santa will be visiting the Germantown Volunteer Fire Department on Saturday, December 16 from 10am-noon. Come visit Santa, take some pictures, have a snack, and talk with your local firefighters and EMTs! No reservation required, just show up anytime between 10am and 12pm. Kids of all ages and well behaved pets are welcome. Donations are appreciated but not required. If you have any questions, email us at info@gvfd29.org.

Peer Drop in Night will be the 1st Wednesday of the month, doors open at 17:30 hours and meeting starts at 18:00 hours. The meetings are for every First Responder; career, volunteer, active and retired members. Drop in nights are another avenue to help support our members in need and everything shared will remain CONFIDENTIAL. All members are welcome to come out, share a story, or listen to stories from current and retired members.

LPVRS members came together last night for a special training on Pre-hospital Obstetric Emergencies, Neonatal Resuscitation, and Transport with LPVRS volunteer member Colleen Kinney. With an extensive background as a Labor & Delivery nurse, Colleen provided our members the opportunity to learn and grow their knowledge of these vital emergency situations. The members of the Sykesville-Freedom District Fire Department are saddened to share the passing of our brother and friend, Wayne Arrington. Obituary, courtesy of Haight Funeral Home: Wayne Arrington, 86, of Sykesville, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, January 17, 2026. He was born on October 15, 1939, to the late Thomas Franklin Arrington and Ruth Mary (Lusk) Arrington. He was the loving husband of Susan C. (Paul) Arrington, his wife of 35 years. Wayne was born in Baltimore and spent his entire life in Sykesville. He was a graduate of Sykesville High School, Class of 1957. Wayne enjoyed several careers. At a very young age Wayne worked on the family farm and family business as a lineman and contractor for BG&E among others. Wayne graduated from Springfield Hospital 's nursing program as an RN, proceeded to graduate from the Maryland State Police Academy, and worked for the Maryland Toll facility, and finally Verizon, where he retired. Along the way, Wayne volunteered with the Sykesville-Freedom District Fire Department, where he was a life member. Wayne loved telling stories of growing up on the Arrington farm, tales of his different jobs, racing cars, playing fast pitch softball, flag football and of course his cats. Mostly, he loved his family and was proud of each one. He was a faithful friend to many and was a longtime member of the Sykesville Parish of Gaither and St. Paul's United Methodist Churches. Surviving in addition to his wife are son Thomas J. Arrington and wife Eileen of Blanchester, OH, sister Joanne Arrington Wolf of Country Meadows, Leader Heights, PA, grandchildren Patricia Phelps, Bobby Phelps (Liz), Michael Phelps (Kelli), Abby Webb (Anthony), John Luke Arrington (Lauren) and Thomas Arrington (Danielle), eight great-grandchildren, nieces Kimberly Wolf and Stephanie Sauter (Rick) and three great-nephews. Maryland State Police Reminding Motorists Move Over Law Expanded To All Vehicles on Oct. 1, 2022 (PIKESVILLE, MD) – The Maryland State Police are reminding motorists that on October 1, 2022, the Move Over Law in Maryland expanded to require motorists to make a lane change or slow down when approaching any stopped, standing, or parked vehicle displaying warning signals – including hazard warning lights, road flares, or other caution signals including traffic cones, caution signs, or non-vehicular warning signs. The intent of the Move Over law is to provide an extra barrier of safety for motorists, along with police officers, fire fighters, emergency medical service personnel and utility workers working on Maryland roads. It is hoped that drivers will become more aware of police and emergency workers and others stopped along the road and move away from them or slow down as they pass by the traffic stop or incident scene. This movement should only be done if another lane in the same direction is available and the move can be made safely and without impeding other traffic. If moving to another lane away from the stopped vehicle is not possible, the law requires drivers to slow to a reasonable and prudent speed that is safe for existing weather, road, and vehicular or pedestrian traffic conditions. Violating the law is a misdemeanor carrying a $110 fine and one point on your license. If the violation causes a crash, the fine is $150 and three points. If there is a death or serious injury, the fine is $750 and three points. The original move over law went into effect in 2010. In 2014, the law was expanded to not only include police cars but also tow trucks, fire trucks and medical and rescue trucks as well. On Oct. 1, 2018, the law expanded again to transportation, service and utility vehicles, as well as waste and recycling trucks, with yellow or amber flashing lights or signal devices.
