Düsseldorf Die Leber spielt eine zentrale Rolle für die Energiespeicherung und -versorgung des Körpers. Bei Typ-2-Diabetes und der Metabolischen Dysfunktion-assoziierten Steatotischen Lebererkrankung (MASLD, umgangssprachlich Fettleber) können die Mitochondrien – die Kraftwerke der Zellen – nicht mehr effizient zwischen verschiedenen Energiequellen wechseln. Forschende des DZD-Partners Deutsches Diabetes-Zentrum (DDZ), der Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf (HHU) und des Universitätsklinikums Düsseldorf (UKD) haben nun erstmals umfassend untersucht, wie gut Mitochondrien in Herz, Muskel, Leber und Niere die Abbauprodukte von Fetten – die Ketonkörper – für die Energiegewinnung nutzen. Normalerweise steigt die Konzentration von Ketonkörpern im Blut durch Fasten, körperliche Aktivität oder eine kohlenhydratarme Ernährung an. Die Studie zeigt, dass der ketonkörperbasierte Energiestoffwechsel bei Insulinresistenz wie zum Beispiel bei Typ-2-Diabetes und MASLD eingeschränkt ist und damit einen möglichen neuen Ansatzpunkt bietet, um den Energiestoffwechsel bei Diabetes gezielt zu verbessern.
