The discovery of a delivery of books on Protestant propaganda in Seville, at the autumn of 1557, convinced the inquisitors of the existence of extent circles that advocated doctrines in contradiction with the catholic Orthodoxy as redefined between 1547 and 1552 during the first sessions of the Council of Trent. A few weeks later, the discovery of a second community in Valladolid, and later, the arrest, on 22d of August 1559, of the Archbishop of Toledo, fray Bartolomé de Carranza y Miranda for charges of Lutheranism gave the impression to the Court that the Kingdom had escaped an odious conspiracy hatched by foreigners and nurtured by members of its own nobility and upper clergy. The religious sensibility of some outstanding figures of the Seville and Valladolid communities can not —contrary to what historiography has long maintained— be reduced to the Erasmist doctrines; many members of these groups a subscribed to the doctrinal core of Protestantism. Many networks of Lutherans in Spain as well within the communities of exiled Spaniards through Europe were linked to the Doctor Egidio, an ancient professor at Alcalá de Henares who became one of the most important preachers of the Cathedral of Seville.
