Pesquisas sobre qualidade da água baseadas em satélites dependem das propriedades ópticas da água fornecidas por sensores ópticos a bordo de satélites de órbita polar desde a década de 1980.Especificamente, satélites geoestacionários (GEO) de cor do oceano oferecem alta resolução temporal (observações a cada 15 minutos), resolução espacial moderada (0,5–1 km) em escala regional, tornando-se uma alternativa promissora aos satélites de órbita polar para o monitoramento quase contínuo de ecossistemas aquáticos altamente dinâmicos. Esta revisão de literatura examina a evolução da tecnologia de satélites GEO e suas aplicações no monitoramento de águas costeiras e interiores. Um resumo dos estudos mais relevantes utilizando sensores geoestacionários é apresentado para indicadores-chave de qualidade da água, como clorofila-a e organismos algais, sólidos suspensos totais e turbidez. Além disso, as missões geoestacionárias foram detalhadas, com seus sensores disponíveis e respectivas características. Embora este tema de pesquisa ainda seja incipiente, estudos recentes demonstraram o potencial das observações multiespectrais GEO para compreender padrões subdiários de qualidade da água.
