Als Ausgangsmaterial gebrauchte er vor allem Stahlbleche, wie sie in der Autoindustrie verwandt werden. Durch Knittern, Einrollen, Stauchen, Komprimieren und Strecken der Metallteile und Blechstücke vervielfältigte er die Oberfläche des Materials und zerlegte es zugleich in möglichst viele Facetten. Mit ihrem gestischen Charakter und der Verwendung von Alltagsmaterialien in leuchtenden Farbvariationen oszillieren Chamberlains Skulpturen zwischen Abstraktem Expressionismus und Pop Art. Bereits im Rahmen seines Studiums am Black Mountain College setzt sich Chamberlain Mitte der 1950er Jahre mit dem Abstrakten Expressionismus auseinander und experimentierte bevorzugt mit vorgefundenen Gegenständen, bevor er 1957 in einem verbogenen Kotflügel eines alten Ford das ideale Material zur Verwirklichung seiner Ideen fand.
