In each issue of Heart , we publish an image challenge which consists of a brief clinical vignette, an image and an accompanying multiple choice question (MCQ), followed by a short discussion. The goal of the image challenge is to make an educational point, so authors must reflect on what they wish to teach. The clarity of the educational point is often what distinguishes a strong image challenge which is accepted for publication from those that are not. Even though the importance of a clearly defined teaching and testing point is self-evident, it is natural that the the inspiration to write an image challenge occurs when an author encounters a remarkable image in clinical practice and wishes to share it. High-quality and engaging images are critical, but the best image challenge submissions are not show-and-tell, in which the image is primary and the MCQ and teaching point are perfunctory. Rather, the image should be used to augment a well-crafted MCQ. MCQs, often maligned, can be effective educational tools; they require active learning, or what cognitive psychologists call ‘retrieval practice’, in which the reader deliberately recalls information which has been previously learnt.1 Retrieval practice improves long-term retention of information and allows clinicians to later recall that information in ‘real life’ and apply that information to a variety of …

82%This study investigates the current state of undergraduate medical ethics education across medical, dental, and nursing schools in South Korea. Drawing on a comprehensive review of curricula and selected syllabi from 40 medical schools, 11 dental schools, and 113 nursing institutions, we analyzed course offerings, credit hours, instructor affiliations, and educational content. The findings reveal a significant quantitative expansion in ethics education since the 2000s, with nearly all medical schools and a majority of dental and nursing schools offering relevant ethics courses. However, significant disparities persist in curricular integration, thematic depth, and instructional quality. All three types of institutions show relatively systematic development, shaped by accreditation standards and academic leadership. However, medical schools have not yet established clear directions for achieving substantive educational goals; dental schools exhibit considerable variation in course content across institutions; and nursing schools still lack fully developed curricula that connect ethics to clinical practice. This study underscores the need for clearer educational goals, stronger faculty collaboration, and pedagogical innovation to foster ethical competence across disciplines. These findings provide a foundational reference for future curricular improvement and policy development in healthcare ethics education.

71%Since 1990s, there has been a change in focus in western language and gender scholarship from gender variations to discourses as sites of gender construction. Theoretically, this turn was inspired and supported by social constructionist and post-structuralist views on gender; methodologically, it was manifested largely by the transition from a preference for quantitative correlation analyses to that for localized qualitative analyses. Most discourse and gender studies could be seen as driven by two kinds of concerns, one on the production and circulation of gender norms, and the other on gender performance. The former is mainly taken up by critical discourse analysts, while the latter by researchers of different backgrounds, including social linguistics, CA, DP, CDA and FPDA. A comprehensive review of these studies can help scholars at home develop discourse and gender studies in Chinese contexts.
