THE ARTISTS Luke & Siena Tieri of Bayadherra Bayadherra is founded by proud Aboriginal Yorta Yorta brother and sister Luke and Siena Tieri. As descendants of the James Family, their cultural origins are embedded in Yorta Yorta Nation; Shepparton, Victoria. Luke and Siena’s grandfather Glenn James OAM is a respected Elder within community and is recognised as the first Indigenous man to umpire Australia rules football in the AFL. CFC: The acronym is not only representative of Carlton Football Club but pays respect to Yorta Yorta footballers of Cummeragunja Football Club; acknowledging the sportsmanship, resilience and positive impact our ancestors have had on our great game, namely Sir Doug Nicholls and later, our grandfather AFL umpire Glenn James. Yarning circles leading into the shell / football acknowledge the contributions of all Indigenous communities across Country. The U shapes surrounding the shell / football represent Carlton players, supporters, members and community depicting how Carlton and sport brings people together - we are a club that is inclusive, united and Stronger Together. CULTURAL STORY ‘Bayadherra’ in Yorta Yorta language means ‘turtle’; Luke and Siena’s spiritual animal totem reflective of their Aboriginal identify and heritage. The artwork’s shell design is inspired by their Yorta Yorta animal totem, the long neck turtle is a symbol of strength and resilience. The three journey lines in the centre of the shell represent Carlton Football Club’s connection and commitment to community in the past, present and future.
