Artist:  San Juan Pueblo Potter Rosita De Herrera Medium:  Natural Clay and clay slips Size: 4 3/4" Across x 2 3/4" H Rosita is the daughter of the late Tomasita Montoya who was instrumental in the revival of San Juan pottery in the 1930's. Born in 1940, Rosita was a very well known potter by the early 1970's. This piece was purchased from Rosita ca. 1979 according to the private estate this piece was a part of. A little history about this style....By 1890, pottery production at San Juan Pueblo had come to a complete halt. In 1930, Regina Cata organized a pottery study group with the intent of reviving pottery production. Eight potters studied ancient pot shards of wares made at San Juan in earlier times and selected "Potsuwii'i"  Incised Ware (ca. 1450-1500) as a basis for contemporary pottery types. Decorative zones of geometric fine lines with selected areas of polished red slip with deep carving were the final result.  The design is distinctly "San Juan" and has been recognized and sought after by pottery collectors since its' revival.

This is a highly polished jar by Russell Sanchez.  The jar has a round shoulder and a short neck. There is a deeply carved medallion with a bear carved in relief.  The bear is highly polished, as is the remainder of the jar.  The center of the bear has a single inset piece of turquoise.  Tiny coral insets surround it.  Around the medallion is another row of coral insets, then two bands of hematite hei-shi beads, and another band of coral inset. There are a total of 120 stones inset throughout the entire piece.  The lid has an inset coral and turquoise on the top.  The jar was fired to a glassy, deep black, which creates a striking coloration with the deep red coral.  Why coral? Russell says the red represents the Winter Clan at San Ildefonso and the turquoise the Summer Clan.  The jar has a striking balance of design, form, and color.  The jar and the lid are both signed on the bottom in the clay, "Russell".  A wonderful traditional and yet very modern piece! 4.25"w x 6.5"h (w/ lid)
