Assistive Technology is "any device, piece of equipment, or product system that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of a student with a complex learning profile." Assistive Technology can be “low tech”, such as a reading strip with colored overlay for visual tracking, or it can be “high tech”, including laptops and online programs.  Either way, the use of technology can help students utilize their strengths to compensate for, or work around, their learning challenges. Here at Learning Prep, students have access to a wide range of tools including Google Read&Write, Bookshare, Kami, and BARD (Braille & Audio Reading Download; over 200,000 human voice audiobooks). These AT tools enable students to listen to digital text (including their own typed text for editing) using text to speech. They also have features include adjustable speech rate, voice options, highlighting in-sync with audio (or students can mute the audio and follow along at their independent reading rate), highlight tools, built in dictionary and picture dictionary, vocabulary list creator, word prediction, speech to text, audio notes, screen recordings, and more. At LPS, onsite assistance and consultation for students by our full time Assistive Technology Specialist (ATS) in accordance with student's IEPs.
