W locie widoczny biały pasek biegnący wzdłuż skrzydła oraz czarny pasek przez środek kupra i ogona. Dziób czarny, średniej długości, lekko zakrzywiony w dół. Biegus zmienny jest najliczniejszym biegusem przelatującym przez nasz kraj, jesienią może tworzyć duże stada.
