近代和風建築の粋（すい）ともいえる、旧長州藩主 毛利家の本邸-江戸時代の大名屋敷様式を日本の伝統技術と現代技術の粋を集めて建てられた華麗な毛利公爵邸は、1916年（大正5年）に竣工しました。 明治維新後、最後の長州藩主 毛利元徳（もうりもとのり）公は新たに創設された華族制度の最高位である公爵の地位を授けられました。元徳公は居住地について「土地健康に適し且つ海陸便利の処を選定すべし」と定め、当時内務大臣であった井上馨（いのうえかおる）の助言を受け、防府市多々良の地を選ばせました。 1890年（明治23年）、本邸の建設が計画されましたが、日清・日露などの戦争により建設は中断されました。 この間に整地や植栽、庭石の調達なども少しずつ進んでいたと考えられ、建設には約四半世紀を要したと考えられます。 1996年に国の史跡・名勝に指定された邸宅の敷地面積は、邸宅と池泉回遊式の前庭などを含め約84,000平方メートルあります。 The Duke Mohri’s splendid residence, built in a feudal lord’s mansion style of the Edo period with the best of both traditional and modern techniques of Japan, was completed in 1916 (Taisho 5). After the Meiji Restoration, Motonori Mohri, the last lord of the Choshu domain, was given the title of Duke, the highest rank in the newly created peerage system. Regarding the place of residence, Lord Motonori Mohri ordered that “such location should be selected that it is beneficial for health and conveniently located to travel by land and sea”. On the advice of Kaoru Inoue, the Minister of Home Affairs at the time, Tatara, Hofu City was selected for the place. In 1890 (Meiji 23), the construction of the main residence was planned, however, the construction was interrupted due to the wars such as the Sino-Japanese and the Russo-Japanese. Land preparation, planting, and procurement of garden stones were possibly progressing little by little during that time, and thus it is considered that the construction took about a quarter of a century. The residence has been designated as a national historic site and scenic spot in 1996, the area of which is approximately 84,000㎡ including houses and the Big Chisen-kaiyu style (pond stroll style ) front garden. - 山口県防府市
