All manner of faculties are already based in the immediate vicinity of this location in the centre of the city, where they are scattered around the surrounding blocks.There is no sense of a ‘campus’, however – the buildings as a whole are invisible in the cityscape. The addition of a large new university building provides the opportunity to create a focus for this disparate collection.The central element of our plan is a large, raised and partially covered square, which takes up most of the site. This immediately forms a linking element between the new giant structure and the varying scale of the surroundings.It also functions as a buffer between the two planned construction phases of the complex.The supposedly coherent city centre consists here of a rather wild confrontation between different scales – one adjacent street is made up of office blocks with an average of six storeys, while the other is flanked by small, low-rise houses next to a colossal church tower. The blind//blank walls inside the block display a similar, cheerful variety. The total volume of the new structure matches the height of the street with the offices, with the square mediating between the other scales. It functions in the narrow streets as a kind of public balcony. The base consists of an underground car park and one faculty at street level. A patio has been hollowed out into this up to parking level. The library is conceived as an autonomously operating building built alongside the square with its main entrance opening onto it. All sorts of elements on the square await the superstructure – a rising floor for the large auditorium, lift shafts, support elements, and so on. The superstructure, which will also have a large central opening, will be made out of prefabricated elements and will be supported by steel frame girders. The different auditoria form a spiral leading from the square to the roof.
