Forage: Berry & Mushroom Map app analytics for September 9

Forage is an app for finding wild berries and mushrooms. Open it and you see a map, same as with your typical Google Maps et al. Except parts of the terrain are covered in colored squares. Each square is a patch where conditions suit the growth of a specific berry or mushroom species. Darker the square, better the odds that something’s out there. HOW DOES THE APP KNOW WHERE TO LOOK? Someone had to sit down and work out what, say, a bilberry wants. Not by asking AI “where do berries grow” but by understanding the de facto biological conditions at play: how much light reaches the ground, what the soil is doing, how close together the trees are, and so on. Luckily, our biologist did the latter and produced a formula for each species (because a chanterelle wants something else entirely than lingonberry). Those formulas run on open geospatial data, forest resource data and the best available research. What you see on the map is that formula running across Sweden, square by square, supplemented and validated with field visits and surveys. HOW TO USE THE APP Pick what you're after, and the map redraws for that species. Then it’s your turn: Go check out if anything’s out there! The bilberry map is free for all users.
