Black and white is not colour with the colour taken out. It is a different way of seeing — light, shape, edge, the weight of a shadow — and everyone who works in it says the same thing: you have to learn to see that way, and the only way to learn is to look. A phone is the worst place to learn it. It shows you a colour picture and asks you to imagine the other one. Barite only shoots black and white. There is no colour frame hiding underneath and no switch to flip back. What you see while you frame is what the app develops — the live preview and the finished photograph run through exactly the same code — so a red door against a grey wall either separates or it doesn't, and you find out before you press the button instead of an hour later on a laptop. Underneath is a real darkroom. Barite takes the raw sensor frame and develops it itself, on the GPU: a channel mixer that reads the colour before discarding it, a highlight shoulder that keeps a bright sky from going to paper white, then contrast, gamma, microcontrast and grain. It is the chain a print goes through, made to run sixty times a second. You never choose a file format. The camera measures the light and picks: a raw Bayer frame while there is light for it, Apple ProRAW as it gets darker, and a fused HEIF where neither would help. The picture is developed from the best frame the light allowed, and the choice is never a menu you have to understand. Three complete looks live on an invisible strip you swipe with your thumb, without leaving the viewfinder. Barite Vibe is the house look — low-key and deep, printed rather than crushed, with a tone curve that follows each frame's own histogram instead of a fixed one. Drama Sky is for clouds and buildings. Calm Portrait is for skin. Each one is a whole render, not an intensity slider. And the shot is not finished at the shutter. Any frame can be taken back into the darkroom and re-developed — and if you want the negative itself kept beside the photograph, that is one switch in the panel. THE CAMERA • Every lens the iPhone has: ultra-wide, wide, telephoto, the native sensor crops, the front camera, and a macro mode that focuses close. • The preview is the photograph. One pipeline, no surprises. • Straightens as you shoot: gyro-driven perspective and horizon correction applied to the preview and the photo alike, so buildings stand up and the sea is level. • A live luminance histogram, a rule-of-thirds grid, and exposure compensation on a strip you drag anywhere along the row — there is no thumb to hunt for. • One panel holds the rest: the framing corrections, the histogram, and whether each shot keeps its negative. • A render can fail; a photograph does not get lost. THE DARKROOM • Re-develop a frame: a tone curve by region, black and white points, six classic filters, grain, microcontrast. • An eight-band per-hue mixer, red through magenta, for the colour the picture no longer shows. • Dodge and burn a face separately from its background, through a mask the camera worked out at the moment of capture. • Press the picture to see it as shot, release to see your version. • A gallery that reads like a contact sheet: every frame at its own proportions, with Recently Deleted underneath it. Barite has no account, no subscription, no advertising and no analytics. Nothing is uploaded, because there is nowhere to upload it to. Your photographs stay on your phone — in your library and in the app's own folder, which you can open in Files. Made by one person, in Ukraine, for his own pocket first.
