Track El Niño and La Niña like an expert.
El Niño and La Niña shape winters across the globe — where it floods,
where the snow falls, where the storm track goes. El Niño Forecast puts
the same diagnostics forecasters use in your pocket: the same indices
NOAA tracks, the same models the forecast centers run, read the way a
forecaster reads them, updated on their schedules and honest about
every date.
CURRENT CONDITIONS
• The daily Niño 3.4 index, absolute or relative to the warming tropics,
with a daily chart for every Niño region
• RONI, NOAA's official index since 2026
• The official NOAA/CPC outlook, with the full monthly discussion and its
figures readable in the app
• Below the surface: phase, warm water volume, ocean–atmosphere coupling,
westerly wind bursts, and a coastal Kelvin wave tracker with an ETA for
when a wave in transit reaches the coast — each with its method and
references
• Subsurface temperature: a cross-section of the equatorial Pacific from
the surface to 300 m, anomaly and recent change
• The ENSO Longitude Index (ELI) — where the Pacific's warmth actually
sits, east to west, with its own forecast
• A pan-and-zoom Pacific map of temperature or sea surface height
anomalies, with options to view recent trends
• Seventy-five years of ENSO history, scrollable, with official episodes
shaded, in RONI or ONI (MEI.v2 since 1979)
• A home-screen widget with today's number
FORECAST EVOLUTION
• The full multi-model plume: seasonal models from NOAA, NASA,
ECMWF, the Met Office and more, with the multi-model mean that
decades of verification say to trust
• The equatorial Pacific Hovmöller: month-by-month sea surface
temperature, convection, thermocline depth and sea surface height,
observed and forecast on the same diagram
• Forecast trends — watch successive monthly runs step the peak up or
down, with a plain-language trend verdict
MY FORECAST
• Pick any point on Earth and get its own outlook: a plain verdict
("Wetter than average"), the map framed on your region, and a
week-by-week timeline
• Six-week and six-month forecast maps for temperature, precipitation,
snowfall and the jet-stream level, as anomalies or percentiles
• Percentile mode tells you how unusual — including "highest on record"
ALERTS
• Push notifications when the official status changes, when a new ONI
posts, and when a new forecast arrives — a few a month, silence
otherwise
LEARN
• Five short chapters on how ENSO actually works, with NOAA's own
figures
BUILT BY A PHD ATMOSPHERIC SCIENTIST
Forecast model data is complex and difficult to interpret. The multi-model
forecast maps are designed to be easy to interpret and actionable. Users can
quickly filter by temperature or precipitation anomalies and time period to
understand the likely trends this winter in their area.
Experts and motivated users have the option to view individual models and
draw their own conclusions.
The app works offline with the last data received. No account, no tracking, no
ads — your exact location never leaves your phone.
Data: NOAA (OISST, CPC, NMME, PSL), Copernicus C3S, Copernicus Marine,
ECMWF S2S, ERA5.
This is an independent app, not affiliated with NOAA.
