Z powodu spadku ruchu i zamknięcia wielu linii bocznych lokomotywy utraciły swój obszar eksploatacji i zostały wycofane z eksploatacji oraz zezłomowane do 1989 roku. Na szczęście zachowało się kilkanaście maszyn, które nadal można podziwiać jako lokomotywy muzealne i zabytkowe.
