Available from W&W Antiques is a romantic oil painting on canvas from the late 19th Century early 20th Century (c.1880 - 1910) - This is an oil painting  by J.M. Dodds / Jonathan Murray Dodds, 1858 - 1935) after a Scottish, Edinburgh painting by Hugh Cameron (1835-1918), 1873 titled 'A Lonely Life'.  It is in the Dutch romantic and intimate style.  Showing a vernacular rural cottage scene with a woman with basket at the door.  - Jonathan Murray Dodds / J.M. Dodds was a late 19th century, early 20th century artist who painted landscapes and seascapes, mainly in the South East of Scotland.  He was the son of a school master, who was born in 1858 in Prestonpans, East Lothian. After moving around Scotland with his father's job, he settled in Edinburgh and married Robina Hunter, daughter of a lemonade manufacturer, in 1877. In 1881 Dodds was described as a 'Commercial Traveller', which was likely supplying artist's materials. By 1891 the family, including six children, were living on Morningside Road in Edinburgh and Jonathan was described as 'Artist (landscape)' (History, references - Lundin Links & Largo History & Royal Academy of Arts). - Unframed, oil on canvas, canvas stamped on the back - School of Art, A. Dott & Son, Edinburgh.  Are noted as: Carvers and gilders, framemakers, artists’ colourmen, from the 1890s also fine art dealers and picture restorers. - Edinburgh paper label partially missing to frame top.  Small losses, but in good antique condition.  Signed J.M.Dodds to the bottom left. Discovery: Listening Before Creating I remember one early project where I jumped straight into sketching ideas, only to realize later that I hadn’t fully understood the audience. It was a hard lesson, but it shaped how I approach discovery now. Today, I start every project by listening really listening. I dig into user behavior, market trends, and business goals, and I ask questions I didn’t even know I should. This phase grounds the work in real insight and ensures that every design decision has a purpose. Ideation: Embracing the Messy Middle Once I understand the problem, I dive into ideation. This is the messy, exciting part of the process where ideas collide and evolve. I sketch, brainstorm, and sometimes throw out dozens of concepts before anything feels right. I’ve found that the “aha” moments often come from this chaos when a wild idea sparks a solution I hadn’t considered. One memorable project involved rethinking a website’s navigation entirely. The initial concept was messy and impractical, but through iteration, it became intuitive and elegant. Prototyping: Turning Ideas into Experience I’ve always believed that design isn’t fully realized until it’s experienced. I use tools like Figma and interactive prototyping to bring ideas to life. Seeing a design in motion often exposes problems that no static mockup could reveal. I remember testing a prototype with a small group of users and noticing one tiny interaction that confused everyone. Fixing it transformed the flow entirely it reminded me that details matter.
