You can pay to earn diamonds, which allow you to unlock legendary characters to play. But those diamonds are also given for free through gameplay. Otherwise, you can also unlock DLCs, which are optional pieces of content, like God Mode or the Royal Hunt. You don't need those to play or enjoy the game, and once unlocked, they will work across saves and devices! Exit the free-to-play grinding monetization tactics, it's that simple. Charlemagne takes place during the years 800-1095, in Europe (as opposed to the game Clovis, which takes place between 481 and 800).
