Matthew Marks is pleased to announce Home Life , the next exhibition in his gallery at 523 West 24th Street. The exhibition features new works by Alex Da Corte, Robert Gober, and Charles Ray, all exhibited for the first time, together with earlier works by Nayland Blake, Thomas Demand, Peter Fischli David Weiss, Lucian Freud, Nan Goldin, and Ken Price. The title comes from the exhibition’s earliest work, a Lucian Freud drawing made during the first winter of World War II, which the young artist spent in Wales in rooms rented from a retired coal miner. Along with his friend from art school David Kentish and the poet Stephen Spender, the eighteen-year-old Freud spent his days largely confined to the house. In this moment when many of us are spending an unprecedented amount of time at home, the works in Home Life ruminate on domesticity in its many forms, from accumulating piles of clothes to the way the sunlight hits the floor at a certain time each day. Alex Da Corte’s Helter Shelter (2020), a large-scale painting of an exploding house, is based on a drawing by the American artist Henry Darger. Window, Curtain, Matches (2020) is the most recent work from Robert Gober’s series of wall-mounted vitrines, which see the artist returning to some of his earliest imagery and motifs. Clothes pile (2020) is a portrait of Charles Ray’s own clothes, a recurring subject for the artist since the early 1970s. Ray began this aluminum sculpture more than fifteen years ago, ultimately completing it with a laser sintering process, which helped achieve an intricacy that could not be produced with casting or carving. Home Life is on view by appointment at 523 West 24th Street from January 29 to March 27, 2021.

This exhibition invites an international group of 1,000 people to each manifest the work as a “place” as part of one total “site” of this expansive exhibition. Invitees who choose to participate will be given a set of parameters specifically for this exhibition, thus establishing a fresh set of artistic interventions. (A copy of the invitation to participants follows, including core tenets of the work, guidelines for its manifestation, and questions to consider.) Participants will initiate the installation in their “place” with between 240 to 1,000 fortune cookies. In addition to this decision, each “place” will decide the location and configuration of the pile, beginning on May 25, 2020. Individuals must be permitted to take pieces from the work, and the participants will regenerate their piles (back to the amount with which they started) halfway through the presentation, on June 14. The exhibition will end on July 5, at which point any remaining fortune cookies will no longer be “the work.” The exhibition recognizes this unique moment in history and reflects the ever-relevant and flexible nature of the work of Felix Gonzalez-Torres.
